Dive rite Nitek plus or Suunto Vyper?

If it's between the Vyper and the Plus, I'd get the Vyper just because the Plus is too freaking small for my taste. I like big numbers and big buttons. Now if a Nitek Duo is an option (same features as the Plus but in a hockey puck form factor) I'd take it over the Vyper.

    New to Scuba Gear Question

Snorkel: Either get the cheapest one you can find or a collapsable one (e.g. you can shove it in your pocket). There's a lot of debate on the usefulness of a snorkel in scuba. I for one fall in the camp that is should be left on the beach or in your pocket but not on your mask. Mask: Fit is...

Back from Cozumel (Cavern / Intro Cave)

I don't really know what a 2 knot current feels like - haven't done much ocean diving. Normal flow at JB means you can swim against it in doubles but you're going to be working real hard and you're not going to be making much progress. Unfortunately once you drop down the chute down to 90'...

Back from Cozumel (Cavern / Intro Cave)

According to the NSS site, Basic cave isn't time limited, just apprentice. Maybe you accidently got your apprentice card instead :) Btw, you got your cert list in your sig backwards... NACD Intro to Cave, NSS Basic cave :) Well, for your next trip to Marianna (about as far into FL as you can...

Taking the Adv Nitrox/Deco plunge. (Warning, LONG)

I did IANTD adv nitrox (which includes deco). I found the book very basic but then again, I had already read all the nifty papers out there on decompression theory (e.g. Understanding M-values, O2 window, etc). The instructor also threw in a TDI adv nitrox card because he didn't feel the 50%...

Back from Cozumel (Cavern / Intro Cave)

Expire? You were carded NACD Intro and CDS Basic? Unless something recently changed, these certs shouldn't expire. I was diving at the intro level for over a year before I went on. Now perhaps you got a NACD doubles waiver and perhaps that expires but the CDS recently changed their...

Back from Cozumel (Cavern / Intro Cave)

Not used to seeing a whole of life in the caves I've been in.. mainly albino crayfish and the occasional catfish. Sounds interesting. Someone always dies in training. I take it you didn't mark the T with a cookie/arrow? So, when are you planning on making the pilgrimage to Florida? Very...

Back from Cozumel (Cavern / Intro Cave)

Congrats. Amazing huh? Did your wife enjoy her cavern class? Never done the caves on the island, only the mainland. May be doing Cozumel with fixxer this year and the women, have to try the island caves. What are they like (depth, haloclines, viz, cave pretties (aka speleothems), etc)...

What is scuba diving's orange shovel?

Here's a setup that has you all beat. Keep in mind this girl was diving a single 80. Deep Outdoors double bladder wing with their transpac style harness- both LP inflators connected. She had a Suunto cobra and a backup SPG. She also had three 2nd stages. Now to top this off, she had hose...

Former Diver Want Compressor For Sailboat in Retirement

Actually I have a friend (in the DFW area) selling a 3.5 CFM Bauer (he upgraded to a Rix). You can PM him on this board if you're interested: fixxervi6 If you're friend is in the DFW area, he is very lucky. One of the real gurus of compressors is local.. Porter at August Industries...

    PADI 2 day OW class

I don't think I have the qualifications to start a new agency but I feel I am contributing. By raising awareness to the issue, I am making a small difference. I've gotten many PM's from future divers asking for advice on finding a class and hopefully a lot of them have gone through an extended...

    PADI 2 day OW class

Please don't take it so personally. We are simply pointing out, through the only evidence we have, that there is more for you to learn than you realize. The problem I find with a lot of divers is that proper buoyancy and trim was never even demonstrated so they never know what it looks like or...

    Deco Reg Choice

Well, there's cheap and then there's inexpensive and reliable. While I love my DS4's on my back, I'm not going to invest that kind of money for DST's on my deco bottles. I think unbalanced DR's or Salvo's breath good enough and are just as reliable as a DST. In other words, what you want in a...

    PADI 2 day OW class

I think the issue that he is taking up is that in none of your photos do you show any evidence of having heard of what trim is - even in the ones where you seem unaware of the camera. You can't be blamed for this. Trim is something that simply can't be taught in such a sort class. Were these...

You never know what you weren't taught. I took a much longer 16 week university class. Here are some things we covered that maybe were abbreviated or not taught at all in the standard class. 1) Gas management (rock bottom calculations) 2) Buoyancy & trim - we spent a lot of time (6+ hours)...

    Deco Reg Choice

I haven't heard anything good about OMS regs but I have never personally breathed off one. I don't think the Mares is what you want either as it doesn't have a 1st stage swivel. While you typically don't want swivels on your backgas, they are very nice on deco bottles and stages as it allows...
