I would like to say that I agree completely with herman's responce earlier on the board. However, I feel that diving in a BP/WING would be the only way to go regardless of warm/cold. You might require an aluminum/SS plate depending on the temp., but I always dive with a plate and would advise...

I would definently dive with a new diver on "fun" dives. How else are they going to learn what to do and not to do unless they dive with others who generally know what they are doing. Common everyone.....be a mentor so you can make the diving better for everyone.

You can order the backplate without handles which is what I did. I heard that the handles are useful for carrying the plate, wings, and STA, but not with the tank on obviously.

After diving a OMS backplate for about 2 years, I decided to get a new one. I purchased a hammerhead (steel plate and heavy weight STA) and all I can say is WOW. It did not pinch me like the OMS one did and is made very well. If you are considering switching, I highly recommend you look at them.
