    Experience diver?

For me an experienced diver is someone who knows nothing as opposed to amateurs who i have found tend to know everything :D

What is your usual local dive visibility?

This was me on Sunday diving at 40 feet of seawater at half one in the afternoon: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wfWA6GVE0qs Despite having incredibly low vis and pretty much total darkness me and my buddy both greatly enjoyed it, not being able to see far ive found makes you able to focus on...

    Bloody Nose

I had this happen to me on occasion. It seemd to generally be caused either by pinching the nose to high or not equalising the mask enough on descent causing some of the small veins in the nose to burst. From http://scuba-instructors.blogspot.com/2009/05/let-not-nosebleed-stop-you-from-scuba.html:

What was the right thing to do in this situation??

You and your buddy are safe and here to question whether you did the right thing, that means you did the right thing.

Does anyone ever ask to see how the tanks are filled?

I know the feeling there, the compressor my dive club uses was bought second hand sometime in the 60's, operating it is alot like driving a steam engine :D It looks like a big pile of rubbish with pipes shooting out everywhere and parts bolted on apparently at random but it actually works really...

Does anyone ever ask to see how the tanks are filled?

Im always quite happy if someone asks me how their bottles are filled, its a good excuse to teach them how to use the club compressor so they can take their turn in the bottle filling rota :D If someone is around a while and dosent ask ill usually "offer" to show them what all those complicated...

It's Halloween, What is your scariest eeriest most haunted dive story?

Swimming along in the pitch black my torch strapped to my BC shining ahead only able to punch a feet feet through the water, the only sensation of movement is all the sediment drifting past the torch beam. Suddenly I feel something punching me in the chest, then it tries to knock my reg and mask...

Boat diving - Tank valve on or off during trip?

I always like to preassureise the system then switch it off and leave it a bit before heading out, that way if it has a leak anywhere ill be able to see from the pressure drop. Most of my diving is off a rhib so we usually end up with peoples rigs piled up on top of each outher on the deck and...

    zero visibility

I find we tend to get alot of zero-vis conditions maybe for the first 10-20 meters or so if its been raining heavily since loads of mud gets washed down off the hills into the ocean. I find luminous gauges help alot and if you get one that isnt to deeply recessed you can push it against the...

nitrogen accumulation ? time vs air quantity.

I think if im reading that right, one lungful of air would provide enough nitrogen to fully saturate the body? So no matter how fast or slow you breathe (thus restoring the level of nitrogen in your lungs to the original level before some of it was absorbed into the tissues) you would still take...

    Confess your SCUBA sins

Never considered that one, half of my lead is made of "proper" weights, the other half is made of roofing lead wrapped in electrical tape. works great since I can cut it up to my liking with sturdy scissors :D Another sin i hadn't considered, industrial marigolds are just so comfy and they...

What causes the depth limit on a KISS Sport Rebreather

The oxygen is injected into the loop at a constant rate that does not change with depth (Since obviously your oxygen consumption doesn't either). This is done by basically having a regulator set to some intermediate pressure say 5 bar and then letting oxygen "leak" into the loop through a tiny...

nitrogen accumulation ? time vs air quantity.

Think of it like a big motor that cools its self by drawing water in from a river. Regardless of how fast or slow the water is pouring through the river the motor is going to draw in water at the same rate regardless. If the motor has to work harder, it will have to draw in more water which isnt...

    Confess your SCUBA sins

Almost every dive I come out of the water and put my mask on my forehead, just to be contrary. Its actually something i think we should tell new divers "If you are on your own and you are in trouble and need assistance, put your mask on your forehead and a padi instructor will appear shortly to...

    What do you do ...

Ive been quite lucky in that 99% of the people i dive with are fellow members of the local dive club. This means we dive together, we go to the pub together, we train together and I can split all the members in the club between "people who helped teach me" and "people who i have helped teach"...

    Switching from AL80 to AL100

Going from an 80 to a 100 i tend to add 4 pounds of lead. So i wear 12 pounds with an 80 and 16 pounds with a 100. The reason i add lead is because even though you are alot heavier at the start, by the end of the dive the cylinder is very buoyant so i need the extra weight to keep me down...

What do you expect from other Divers?

I expect any diver i dont know to be absolutely terrible and to have zero skill, knowledge or experience regardless of what they say or how they appear. Since i started expecting the worst from all new dive buddies, i have been pleasantly surprised on several occasions but never unpleasantly...

A question from an 11 year old.

Ive tried breathing off the BC and found it worked quite well. If you add a wee "suicide" bottle to your BC you even have a totally redundant air supply! I would say however that i had to practice alot in the pool beforehand to get the knack down. Getting the timing right for breathing, pushing...
