Visibility at Venice and Naples are about the same.

    PADI vs NAUI

By 1983, PADI's classes were almost the same as those of today. The only major change is they required swimming in 1983, today it's swimming or snorkeling. By the way, shorter classes are not easier, they are just faster. I totally agree which is one reason I advocate longer, more...

Would you lay on a sandy bottom?

If I had a reason to do so, sure. True, but unless you don't look or haven't yet learned how to see things underwater (a skill we all have to learn), they are pretty easy to see and thus easy to avoid.

    PADI vs NAUI

You are correct, but they demonstrate only that not all geeks and nerds fit the stereotype. We already knew that. I even admitted that in my post you were trying to refute with your two exceptions. Thal, who has actually seen his students, appears to agree with my point.

    PADI vs NAUI

If you use agencies with low standards, when other options are available, you are encouraging agencies to have low standards. If you are happy with agencies having low standards, continue to use them. Yes, students will learn what you teach them. If you believe in the fast class with few...

    PADI vs NAUI

Overall, you can't do much. In small areas we can all make a difference. Don't hire instructors unless they tewach top notch classes. If you are an instructor, don't use agencies with low standards or who don't allow instructors to add requirements to their classes. Help others learn the...

    Dive Instructor Ratio = 16/1?

PADI had a 16:1 ratio for confined water (pool) in 1972. Their open water ratio at the time was 10:1. The last time I checked (2002) PADI's ratio was 10:1 in the pool and 8:1 in open water. SEI's ratio is 10:1 in the pool and 6:1 in open water.

    Air2 nipple too large

Maybe you missed my reply, I don't have the data on flow rates. I'm sure Scubapro will be happy to provide it to you if you are interested enough to ask.

    PADI vs NAUI

Everyone has a right not to certify unless that right is taken away. PADI takes it away with "you must....issue a PADI certification to all divers who satisfactorily meet the preformance requirements." NAUI and other agencies such as SEI do not take it away with similar rules in their...

    Air2 nipple too large

I don't know. I don't have the data, but there's an easy experiment you can do. Take two identical BCs, one with a regular LPI and one with an Air II. Hook them up to identical tanks filled to identical pressures with identical regulators. One of the regs will, of course, have the Air II...

    Air2 nipple too large

The difference is intentional. A regular LPI hose does not deliver enough air for a regulator.

    hands while diving

I'm trying to imagine why such a turn (using any method) would be necessary or desirable. I'm drawing a total blank. While a sharp turn might be necessary, I can only imagine them in situations where we would be in single file (no room to be side by side). Normally, I make turns that are best...

    Is this a good deal?

Looks high to me. Nemrod made double hose regs at least into the 90s.

How do you not get water up your nose when you remove your mask?

I tell my students, "You only need 3 things at the pool at this point. 1. Mask 2. Snorkel 3. Weight belt with weight." At this point, I do overweight my students. At no point will we leave the shallow end of the pool and I stay between my students and the deep end. We take our snorkels...

    PADI vs NAUI

If someone with an unsafe attitude wants to risk their life, I believe they have every right to do so. If some weighing 400 lbs wants to risk their life diving, I believe they have every right to do so. I will not try to stop either one of them. On the other hand, I won't help either one of...

    PADI vs NAUI

Not necessarily. Imagine a bright, talented student with a very bad attitude. He aces all the quizes and tests, he gets every skill perfectly every time, but he brags about all the things he's going to do once he gets his c-card. His plans include solo to 300+ feet on an AL 80 right after...

    PADI vs NAUI

It's not a matter of what I would like to do, it's what I do. Since I'm not a PADI instructor and have never taught to PADI standards, I'm not in violation, I'm teaching to higher standards. Specifically, the order of presentation of skills in my class would violate PADI standards. For...
