Teaching family. Good or bad idea?

Thanks for all the advice thus far! It's about what I expected as far as the pitfalls and expectations. I guess it really CAN go either way and it does strongly depend on the relationship of the people involved and the personalities as well. I'm thinking what I'll do is start off teaching...

Teaching family. Good or bad idea?

Not sure if this should go in "Basic", but I figure here I can hear from both the instructors/DMs as well as the "student side". My brother is coming back to the US in a few weeks after his Army commitment is up and wants me to teach him to dive, (I'm an instructor, so it would be legit). I...

    Scubapro A700 Vs. S600

Do you think that's because SP is basically a "piston company" and has their engineering history and "corporate identity" tied to piston firsts? I'm a Mk17 fan and prefer it to the Mk25, but you're right, I see the Mk25 pushed HARD over the 17 in many cases. The shop I work in prefers it...

    Fins: OMS Slipstream vs. Jets

Now I'll admit I've never used the F1s, but a teammate does, and I'll admit that I am a Jetfin fan and I've never experienced pain from the foot-pocket, (they seems "made for me", maybe I'm lucky?), but just looking at the pocket of the F1, it looks more ergonomic and "natural" than the Jetfin...

    Poseidon regulators

Doubles and singles rig are SOLD. "Duration" nitrox reg still available. Will throw on a spare XStream Octo I have here to make a complete singles (short-hose) set. It's got the least use of any of them, so the seat and internals are like-new, and it's all factory O2-clean, (at least on the...

    Fins: OMS Slipstream vs. Jets

Scubapro introduced the "New XXL" Jet last year and it nicely fills the gap between the XL and the old XXL, which is now the XXXL, (and I agree, you could fit a cantaloupe in the foot pocket). The new XXL fits my diminutive size-8-rockbooted-feet like it was made for me. One of my size-10/11...

Do you REALLY know how to scuba dive?

30 years old here and as an auto enthusiast with high-test running in my veins, I recognized it. ;) Greatest driver to have never won a world championship. (Pssst: not trying to be TOO pedantic, but it's "Stirling".) :D On-topic, I think the analogy to flying is appropriate which is that the...

    Poseidon regulators

I'll look into shipping to Canada. "Shipped" means that is the price for the regs, plus shipping. No extra costs on top of that. If shipping to Canada is ridiculous, there might be a small charge, but if it's not too bad, or similar to the US, same cost. (I've never shipped anything to...

Can someone run down which tanks work best for DIR style stage bottles?

Well, it was a dive-industry rumor I heard on the internet, and you KNOW how that goes...:D (Next thing you know, you'll tell me the president of PADI was in Playgirl magazine... ;) )

Can someone run down which tanks work best for DIR style stage bottles?

I heard Hy-Mark was Chinese. I have an issue with that and would refuse to purchase them if that was the case, so I hope it isn't so.

DIR compliant First and Second Stages

LOL, I said they were going bye-bye, not "given away!" LOL! ;) They're all "for sale", and if you're interested, let's talk. XStreams, Jetstreams, Cyklons, I got 'em all. I got prices set, but I'm negotiable and fair. I'm not out to screw the buyer, but I'm also not out to screw myself.

What to expect out of a DIR drysuit class?

To be fair, he was a new instructor at the time, and we're in Texas, where drysuit use is uncommon, so he had never taught the class personally. He was probably going from recollection. I'll let him know, thanks!

I'd be interested in this as well.

DIR compliant First and Second Stages

I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will chime in, but here's what I've gleaned: The 2nd stage criteria is: Downstream (IE, no Poseidon Jetstream/Odins or XStream or other upstream regs) - so if it fails, it fails open Easy to take apart underwater (faceplate comes off to clear debris) - to...

What to expect out of a DIR drysuit class?

NAUI teaches to use the BC/Wing for buoyancy control and the suit just enough to offset squeeze. I heard PADI teaches the suit as buoyancy, but I asked a PADI instructor friend of mine and he said they don't teach it that way. I've seen and heard of it done, so I know someone out there is...

    Looking for Buhlmann's 1983/1984 book

I've got a 3-ring-bound photocopied version that I'll send you for free (English). If it's for "collecting", (which I presume it is, hence the desire for the hardcover and published language being irrelevant), then I apologize and I hope you find one! It's such a tough read, like an...

    Best practical dive vehicle

I've got an Isuzu Rodeo, and I love the space, and the mileage is OK for a 3.5 V6, (17-19 city, 22-25 freeway), but I do sometimes long for a pickup. I need a vehicle I can tow a ski boat with, (my other passion), so a SUV or truck is a must. I LONG for a '96-'97 3/4 ton Ford longbox with the...

    Travelling with Equipment

Carry on the regulators, computer/BT, primary mask and can light. Only thing that's been an issue has been the can light battery. Makes the X-ray screeners go "WTF?" and they visually inspect. Then everything's cool.
