GUE Fundamentals w/Bob Sherwood Course Report

Good report. Bob's a great instructor, (he did my Fundies class), and taking Fundamentals with him was a great experience. Glad you found it both enjoyable and educational. I would not be overstating my case that taking Fundies completely changed how I dive. It was an awakening. For me at...

    Air Fill Protocol

At our shop, if I slowfill, I'll go to 31-3200 on the gauge, since they're only accurate to 100psi anyway, and I always err towards the side of "more" since I personally HATE short fills, (I consider 2900 a short fill), and I would never do that to a customer. I typically fill aluminums to 3300...

    Diving Fitness

I love it, and I agree, it's not a cult, but gets a bad rap from eager participants' enthusiasm toward non-practioners. Sorta like DIR/GUE But it also shows stunning results and is highly effective as a method and philosophy. Sorta like DIR/GUE Wait... Oh crap...wrong thread...:D ;);)

    Diving Fitness

I just started Crossfit. It's kicking my butt. I was in top shape when I was in the Army, and while I've only been out three years, and I still am a good height/weight (5'11"/180lbs), with generally OK fitness, it's showed me that I am grossly out of shape. I'd try it. Good stuff.

    Regulator Vomiting

Had a buddy get seasick on a boat one morning. It didn't help that he was out partying the night prior. First dive, he barfed through the regulator. We dive with 7' hoses, so he switched to his backup, deployed the primary, unscrewed the faceplate, cleaned out the reg, put it back together...

    Dive Operations enforcing rules

Personal preference. I hate being wet. ;) Plus, and this is weird...I friggin' LOVE drygloves. Most drysuit divers I know hate 'em. Shoot, I've got teammates that dive dry that REFUSE to use 'em. Most divers that use 'em do it because they have to and they don't like it. They went on my...

Getting all your gear...even tanks, when flying somewhere.

I've taken everything with me, except tanks. Steel BP/W, Regs, can light, drysuit, the whole nine yards. I get tanks and lead where I'm going. It takes some creative packing, and the ability to "do more with less" regarding the rest of your luggage, but it can be done. If they didn't have...

Gearing up and Training for Cavern/Basic Cave

Best to speak directly to your instructor on what gear is appropriate instead of a bunch of random divers on the internet. This will ensure that you show up equipped correctly and without having wasted money chasing random suggestions or buying inappropriate gear. Relating my personal...

    Dive Operations enforcing rules

It doesn't need protecting FROM ME. I don't like being lumped in with divers who have no control and need LAWS to protect the reefs from them. I honestly think in cases like that, one the first day, there should be "check dives" on the bunny-slope sites like I've heard some OPs do. The divers...

    Dive Operations enforcing rules

Oh, I know the WHY behind all of it, and I think it's lowest-common-denominator BS. As has been said, they have their rules, but those rules clearly are in place because a certain percentage of the clientele require them. I simply won't patronize an operator with such rules. Partially because...

    Dive Operations enforcing rules

Not directed at me, but a few that I won't dive under are: No gloves* (This one is asterisked because if I'm diving wet, fine. But if the water is below 85*, I'm diving dry and I dive with drygloves 24/7/365. So if I'm planning on being dry, which is 99% of the time, gloves ARE part of the...

    Hog for Rec

What are you doing this weekend? I teach at a local shop and am the head of a (probably the only) local "DIR" dive club. A couple of us will be at Windy Point on Sunday, likely in the afternoon. If you wanna meet up and dive, we can square your rig away. I know you're little leery of...

Coming out of retirement (from diving)

I dive dry nearly year-round, but I'm weird. A 5mm should be fine. I used one until I went dry. Not a bad tank. I personally am ambivalent to them, but if you can trim it out, go for it. Make sure it's in Hydro at least. I'm a BP/W guy and recommend them, but if you're not going into...

How did you choose your con ed instructors?

Zombie thread I know, but I have a relevant question: I've read here that one should find "the one" instructor that you just "gel" and "fit" with and take further tech/cave/high-speed-low-drag training through them, since there is trust and "connection" with them where you are both "simpatico"...

    Santi heated vest - review

My mentor is Bob Sherwood and he's a BIG believer in the heated vests. To the point that in a drysuit class with him he said, "450-weight underwear is obsolete. The future is 300-weight and a heated vest." Maybe a bit of overstating the case, but he was SO adamant about how badass a heated...

    Divers North-Northwest-West of Ft. Worth

It's cool. We are just trying to make better divers. Tweaks, classes, it's all good. We want to spread the word and get people into this, so whatever we gotta do.

    Divers North-Northwest-West of Ft. Worth

Actually, the Tweaks will be different than the "Precision Buoyancy" class. That's two full days, including lecture, gear modification, video feedback, and a mix of pool and OW dives. You said you might be digging the full class. The tweaks are about 3-4 hours at a local lake, about one hour...
