Long term Travel with dive gear

If you plan working at a dive centre, remember you’ll need work permits on entry to most countries. For Thailand, I think it’s 3 month then you have to leave the country to renew.

Going into Deco as Rec Diver

On a recent 36m dive my computer twice indicated a 4 min mandatory stop. Once at 22m which cleared by the time we got up to 15m, then again at 12m but cleared before we got to 9m - then a normal 3 min safety at 6m, total dive time 70 min. The important aspect is calculating the gas requirement...

Thoughts on purchase of unused, long-discontinued BCD?

I’ve got an old AP Valves jacket (considered indestructible) which I haven’t used in 15 years. If I wanted to bring it back into service I would send it to AP to get the inner bag, hoses and O-rings charged. The chances they’re all brittle now and will crack when used.

Unknown Maldives fatality reported by her dive buddy

Not so, an experienced diver/instructor with 1,000s of dives got one near the end of a Red Sea liveaboard trip, last year.

Unknown Maldives fatality reported by her dive buddy

This is wild speculation, but could be ’Immersion Pulmonary Oedema’.

Anyone else really nervous in the beginning?

I’ve done hundreds of unknown dive sites. It’s how to expand the known ones. Yes, plan maximum depth, time and gas (air) requirements, research for information on entry and exit, tides and current, weather, what your expecting to see, location of public phones (if no mobile sign), availability...

Anyone else really nervous in the beginning?

Even though you’re with a guide/instructor you should get into the habit of planning your own dive profiles. I confirm that my students have gone through the planning cycle for each dive. That way they are better prepared for the day they’re not with a competent guide/instructor or even diving...

Packing for long-term travel with scuba gear

Be careful going into Australia and New Zealand, they are very touchy about visitors having the possibility of working. And will refuse entry on a whim.

Anyone else really nervous in the beginning?

If you weren’t diving with your own computer. Tell us you planned the dives using tables before getting in the water. Ideally, you had a slate with max depth and times on it.

Anyone else really nervous in the beginning?

I second this^^^? Adding a camera at this stage could be task loading you don’t want. There are times I leave my camera at home to remind myself why I go diving, rather than looking for the next shot.

Anyone else really nervous in the beginning?

Although I’ve been diving for over 40 years I remind myself of what the 6m training depth is like by looking at a normal house, about 7m to the top of the roof.

This, and some countries require a work permit, which may need to be applied for before arrival, i.e. Thailand.

How do you wind up DSMB while ascending?

I've had a reel fall apart during an ascent, like you said I just rapped the line round what was left of the reel.

    Dive Medicals

It’s interesting that in the last few years some U.S. courts have rejected the PADI waiver forms, as you know they’re not valid in the U.K.

    Dive Medicals

What evidence do you have to support your argument. Medicals originated because of a number of early fatalities. Insurance, well that’s society that pushed that be making claims. BSAC in the U.K. introduced ’member to member’ insurance after the relatives of a diving fatality threatened to sue...

No snow here in Scotland, water 8.7’C at 30m 4’C at 6m, air 6’C. Hands were cool after an hours dive.
