Grand Cayman - Where’s the fish?

Have done 4 dives over the past week - 2 from Turtle Reef and two off a boat off SMB (Trinity Caves and Harbour Heights). Have to say that things are looking really good fish-wise. Lots of the usual suspects, with big schools hanging out. Spotted Eagle Ray, stingrays, Turtles, Lobster, just...

    Sportdiver White balance settings?

I do the same as jborg - white balance depends too much on depth and light conditions, so I don't want to use a preset. I shoot raw (JPG plus DNG), trash the JPGs. My buddy has white weight pockets, so I use that to get the white balance value that I can apply to all the photos on that dive...

    1-Day in George Town

There are a few dive ops left that still cater to the cruise visitor, but for the life of me I don't remember which ones survived COVID. Take a look at some websites of dive ops and see which ones say they cater to those unusual times and then contact them for details. Dive ops on Cayman are...

    New Cayman highway to East

And they have to weigh that up against the non-tourist sector growth, for sure. Like Health care tourism, the financial sector and so on.

    New Cayman highway to East

I have mixed feelings about this. On the one side, I will mourn the loss of mangroves, agricultural land and other natural habitats, but on the other side, it's economically probably good for the island. Economic growth is something that every nation seeks, and this will definitely bring it...

    Question Sargassum Report?

Yes, the southern end of SMB is usually subject to erosion, I have found - far more than the central areas (Ritz, Kimpton) or the northern end of the beach. Thanks for that update.

    Question Sargassum Report?

Which part of SMB were you at? I do find it varies along the length quite a bit.

    Pre arrival Covid test

I couldn't get the QR code to work so just uploaded the CDC card images into the Travel Cayman website and it worked fine.

    Pre arrival Covid test

If you are fully vaccinated yes then after July 1 you will not need to be tested, according to an announcement today. You still need to prove vaccination using the Travel Cayman website.

Trip Report East end, Grand Cayman

Eden Rock suffered from some damage from a wayward cruise ship - the swim-throughs were closed for a while - not sure if they are open again. They were one of the few shore-dive swim-throughs, but apart from that I didn't consider it a great dive site - I would do Sunset House over Eden Rock...

    Shore diving in Grand Cayman

The only place in the world that the crime rate is zero is where there aren't any humans :) I talked to a lot of locals during my trip and nobody mentioned petty theft being up.

    Non-diving recommendations?

Most storms are brief and localised. There are some exceptions where lousy weather can set in. This Saturday looks decent with a wind out of the East, so the whole West Side should be divable - if you want a dive after you arrived, head to Macabuca and do Turtle Reef. Sunday, Monday and...

    Shore diving in Grand Cayman

Grand Cayman has really low crime rates. As long as you don't have anything obviously valuable in your car then it's not going to get broken in to (it may not get broken in to even if you DO have something valuable). And leave the keys at the front desk.

    Non-diving recommendations?

Have a car, would be my first tip. :-) Take a look at which direction the wind is coming from and head to a beach that is on the leeward side of that. There are some nice protected beaches. A drive around the island can be fun, too - if you are staying on the west side of the island, lunch...

Trip Report East end, Grand Cayman

Thanks for the TR - like you I am not impressed by Lighthouse Point as a shore dive. Turtle Reef @ Macabuca is far superior, imo.
