Looking for shore dive buddy - GC 3/26 - 4/1

Andy, Here is an "insider" tip... make sure that on the first few days you are there you go down to the man-made beach for sunset. It's often a point in the day where the various guests and visitors head down there to enjoy beverages and watch the sun go down. People tend to be pretty...

    Pre flight day suggestion

Last time I was at Smith's close to lunch time I actually saw a Dominos pizza delivery car bringing people on the beach pizza... It wouldn't be my choice of food on the island, but for some it may be perfect! Pizza on the beach! :-)

    Pre flight day suggestion

My suggestion would be to visit a grocery store and pick up drinks, snacks, and lunch (sandwiches, salads, etc.) and, if your accommodation doesn't have one a cheap cooler. The challenge with SMB and restaurants is that between about 10am and 2pm they get pretty well inundated with cruise...

Feedback on Grand Cayman dive sites for new guidebook

He manages some of them, but not all. I am an owner there (in the spirit of full disclosure) and I agree that they are spacious and well-priced. :-) And your point is exactly why I say that this is an open question right now that I hope to get resolved. Some owners have said that it's not...

Feedback on Grand Cayman dive sites for new guidebook

Because, when you drop down through the cut to the left of the buoy and look right and up, the overhang of the wall looks like a wave that is about to crash - hence the use of the surfer term "pipeline". There is an open question right now whether the use of the dive station at Coconut Bay...

grand cayman accommodations - shore diving hidden gems

I was going to suggest Paradise Pointe as well, as they are 1BR units. I don't know of any 1BR/studio units on the water in North West Point - Bonnie's Arch (which has good shore diving) is 2-3 BR, Coconut Bay is 2-3BR. I really have no idea where "Hepps condos" are - a google search doesn't...

Trip Report Trip report: Grand Cayman and Little Cayman

Maybe there is a difference between the East End and West Bay sites, then. Haven't done both to be able to compare.

Trip Report Trip report: Grand Cayman and Little Cayman

Thank you very much for this detailed report - some great info, there! Just a comment about the diving below 50 feet on Grand Cayman - I haven't dove the east end yet, but I have to say that the dive sites off West Bay and the North side have a lot of coral and life all the way down to 110...

New Study Shows Decline in Health of Cayman's Reefs Over 20 Years

Heading to Cayman Island first time as a diver

I could do the Macabuca/Turtle Reef dive site every day of a trip and I don't think I would get bored. So much to see in either direction, or you can swim out to coral head covered in really nice corals further out toward the big wall. Lighthouse Point is fun because of the statue - nice photo...

    The Last supper......:-)

If I were on the island for one night and wanted to get the island feel, then I would go with Cracked Conch. You are overlooking the water (the Caribbean, not the North Sound). Food is good, service is good. If I wanted one great dining experience I would go with Bacaro. If I wanted fancy...

    Grand Cayman in March

Check out Paradise Pointe - they have 1 bedroom units with full kitchens, and they are just down the road (0.3 miles) from the West Bay Dock, which is where a lot of dive boats depart. VIVO is about a mile or so away.

Dive boat accident involving Dive tech and Cathy Church boat

I have done a lot of my diving on Grand Cayman and have found that all boat captains and crew were very professional and highly safety-oriented. I wish I could say the same for some other dive locations I have been to, but I won't name names....

    Grand Cayman in March

I have gone off the dock and off the sea pool at that location - the sea pool is a lot easier, for sure. It's not a bad shore dive, as you have the guardian of the reef statue right by the mini wall. They also rent underwater scooters which were a lot of fun, too. You have several shore...

    Grand Cayman in March

I spent a week on Cayman with a Vegan. She loved Vivo, Bread and Chocolate, the vegetarian menu at Agua, but said that everywhere she went they had something INTERESTING she could eat, as opposed to what felt like a "token veggie dish". What blew her away, though, was the selection in the...

    History of 18m depth limit?

See, that makes sense to me - whether they claim they have done deep dives or they have a AOW card you'd want to see them in the water in easier conditions. I mean what's to stop someone faking up a log book by making up dives?

    History of 18m depth limit?

Oh I will readily admit that, although my sister-in-law did exactly this during a trip to Australia - PADI OW followed right away with PADI AOW, and I have met a couple of other people in the Cayman Islands who did exactly that. So while not common, it's not unheard of. I completely agree -...
