I have a couple of 2 1/2lb ring weights made for the bottom of a 7.25 tank. They're about 1/4" thick...Didn't know they weren't easily available. I don't use them anymore since I have steels.
I'm partial to my Mares Powerplanas, though it occurs to me they may be a bit heavy for my SM rig. They're the first fin I was able to backfin with and the rubber straps are very easy to don/doff so I've used them exclusively for cold/SM.
I've been blaming my tanks and weights for my head up...
Make sure your buddy knows that you're nervous and take it slow. Make sure that you've done all your checks so you can take a few relaxing breaths without worrying about anything before you descend.
You won't feel any difference between 35' and 60', other than it getting colder and clearing...
I had an aluminum BP and wing. Worked great for cold and warm, good for travel as well...let the dive op carry the damn weights. Got rid of it in my quest for the perfect rig. Shoulda kept it. However, I'm happy with my Air travel for tropics and my Transpac for singles cold. LTZ for SM...

As for now; I like my Cressi Air Travel when I'm headed...

You're in Chicago and there is no off season for diving even there. Of course that means dry suits and cold water, but with the right training and experience, (never underestimate the value of pool time. You'd be surprised at how useful pool practice sessions are.), diving year round is quite...
Not so much the gas use. More about his overall competency He took 7 dives to be as good as I was at 100 dives. I guess my point is that we shouldn't assume that a more experienced diver is necessarily better.
My best experience that I can offer is a dive with an instabuddy in Grand Cayman. I asked about his dive experience and he said he had 7 dives. I assured him that we would be fine. I was AOW at the time and had a little over 100 dives. My own thought was that it was gonna be a short dive..oh...
