How to protect oneself against lax dive shop operators

Try to achieve the level of competency where this doesn't influence you since you don't really depend on DMs and boat captains (unfortunately captains are hard not to depend on)...

    What would you do?

I would wait for some current :D btw. nothing special, just continue the dive if you feel ok (if you feel stress, abort!)... problems do happen and that's why your buddy should be there... (and you should buy your own regs and service them on regular basis) no big deal...

Some questions for people in: Portugal, Spain, Italy, Croatia, Greece ETC...

croatia also has some idiotic laws but if you come during summer you'll have no problem finding dive centers... north adriatic is shallow but has some very good/accessible wrecks (good vis. is around 6-10m) - greatest part of this diving is that it's close to central europe so people can come...

Regulator record - anyone beat this?

uhhhh, don't go there... it happened here (in croatia) and now it's very hard to just go and dive (and dive centers usually don't work during winter) - you need a lot of paperwork (or money) and it all happened under false impression of improving safety

How do you wash neoprene socks?

you wash it in plain water... but you do it every time (after each day of diving) and you dry one side then turn inside-out...

Some questions for people in: Portugal, Spain, Italy, Croatia, Greece ETC...

In Croatia you will have a dive center in almost every place you are, so just pick one... Just remember that depths are usually at least 100ft (30m) and frequently more (wrecks)... Find a center that has a wreck near-by and you'll be ok...

    Compact Camera with RAW, stabilization?

Well, but we all know that it's not the camera price that's the problem, but the price of everything else... (lens, housing, ports, strobes...) with a compact you can just buy a camera and a housing and get pictures, but with dslr you need at least: camera, lens, housing with port, external...

    When would you head back.......

he never said there was a buddy in the water, so your calculation is wrong! btw. since you are asking, you should start getting back as soon as you hit 100ft

Suit thickness for 19-23 C water?

5mm minimum, 7mm recommended... (wouldn't use dry suit too much since air temps are already around 30C) if surface is 23C then you can expect 14-16C on 30m

    Crete, Greece

free diving between scuba dives can be dangerous (you still have extra nitrogen in your blood and free dives make you change pressure quickly) so be carefull... :no

    slideshow help please

If you are going to make a video DVD it will require a lot of time and processing power (everything has to be reencoded to mpeg2 + ac3 audio which is a tough job) and there is a chance it won't all fit in a DVD. The easiest solution is to make a data DVD and just copy the .avi file to the media...

The General Angst Over the PADI eLearning Program

I use e-learning all the time at work (non-diving) but only as a tool to choose what I really want to learn! When I choose, I go and enroll to an actual course! e-learning should not be used as proof of competence, or Darwin will have to prove again that he was right and our gene pool is...

Croatia - The Great Diving Destination

No real liveaboards but everything can be organized... Most boats are not really built for divers but if you have a group of divers and a compressor (maybe they already have it on the boat) you can rent a boat and there you have it (almost, you still need the paperwork)...

    Happy Birthday hvulin!

btw. the sea (northern Adriatic) has reached 14C (57F) on surface and 12C (53F) on 30m !!! middle Adriatic (around Sibenik) is 16C/14C (60F/57F) and south is probably even better (but I'll stick to dry suit until I can jump in the sea at the end of a dive and not die!)

    Happy Birthday hvulin!

Thanks, unfortunately no diving today (why do we have to work at all???) but I did a dive on saturday (wreck Peltastis) and will hopefully be diving on the weekend... Winter is gone so I started diving with a camera again (I can't use it with thick gloves). Some new pictures are on my web...

    Opatija, Croatia suggestion please!!

there are a lot of dive centers around there (at least one in every place) so you can just pick the closest one... best things to see: wrecks bottom: mud visibility: 1-10m (I'd say about 6m average) sea life: nothing big, but a lot of fish around wrecks depth: usually from 30m to 50m
