    Palm Beach Dive Thread

fin divers.. that's a new one! LOVE it! The vis was crap near the top, good deep, but dang! it was dark! Got 9 lionfish total between the two dives. Dives were a little deeper than I like.. since I like longer bottom times.. but not complaining. :) Twas a good day to be on the water...

Question Local divers, how do you motivate yourself when the weather is crap?

Living in paradise where decent diving is just a short drive away, crappy weather means I have a list of other things to do. Dive when the weather is good. If I can't dive, I'm kayaking. If not kayaking, hiking. If not hiking, gardening. If not gardening then housework...

Local Divers: How long does it take you to get to your favorite dive site?

20-40 minutes depending on time of day and traffic to Hollywood Beach, 30min+ for any other dive sites near Ft. Lauderdale. 90 minutes to the keys, 3 hours to the west coast, 5 hours to the springs. View from the water

Question For purposes of logs and certifications, what counts as a "dive"?

Yep agree. I did end up writing in my log book the aborted dive. Obviously did not give it a number. Again, agree. I am at that point. My logbook reads more like a diary., having made custom pages with the top third info and the rest of the page for details. I tell others I keep a paper log so...

Question For purposes of logs and certifications, what counts as a "dive"?

I aborted a dive today. Rarely do I do that. Buddy and I agreed was the best decision. The reasoning behind aborting (already in the water and ready to descend) and the swim out from shore and back are the adventure part, I'd like to capture.. I didn't dive, but will probably put it in my log...

Question For purposes of logs and certifications, what counts as a "dive"?

According to some arbitrary standard, not logging dives under 5m/16ft would remove about 200 dives from my log book. On the other side of the coin, most of those 200 dives are well over 2 hours, some longer. Buoyancy is KEY!!! That is a skill learned at shallow depths fastest! Really, what you...

Trip Report one day in hollywood beach

Yes, what bassplayer said. Check out the beach cams, www.sunny.org shows LBTS, and there are links to Hollywood's beach cams, and Dania Beach. All three will give good indications of current conditions. Generally speaking it is usually better in the morning, though I have had decent dives later...

Trip Report one day in hollywood beach

Oh saw a video from today of a group of divers on YBR. They looked like a mess. Not nearly as bad though as what I've seen at the bridge.. everyone in this group seemed to have a gopro on a stick, or a big knife with assorted lobster gear.. UGh..

Trip Report one day in hollywood beach

Welcome to Hollyweird, you hit two of my fav spots. YBR holds a special place in my heart. Did a solo dive there on Thursday, and yeah, so much better watching the fish and all when there are not mobs of divers. There is a particular fish there, and if you are really quiet, and take your time...

    Blue Heron Bridge Trolls III

This past weekend I volunteered with the Swim for Alligator Lighthouse as a kayak support for a solo swimmer. There was a patch about a half mile wide loaded with jellies. So heading out to the lighthouse and back swimmers had to get through the jellies. The two years prior they were all over...

    Blue Heron Bridge Trolls III

Yikes! I've only seen a couple over the years. The first was off the beach on a night dive south of LBTS. That was quite a few years ago. Lots of jellies, and close to shore, I saw the box jelly! Need to get my latest photos processed from my dive a few days ago.. lots of nudis!

Diver Down SCUBA Flag Tube Mount

I will clip my flag when towing till I hear boats. Then it quickly comes unclipped. No need to be dragged by some numskull who thinks they found a wayward dive flag....
