Do I need to get certified?

SASPOTATO had some really good comments on this. If you are talking an artificial reef then there are exits cut and the wreck has been cleaned. Depending upon the level of cleanliness though, over time you can get into holes and areas that were never cleaned (like below decks on the Duane in...

    Anyone experience with DAN hotline?

I have used the DAN hotline for a diver who took a DCS hit and they were excellent. In fact the diver was not a member but I was so they were still very helpful. As far as calling and asking for advice like that, these operators are trained in a very narrow spectrum of skills so I would not...

    Enriched Air

With the class you will learn how to calculate the best Nitrox mix, you will learn how to calculate the Max Operating Depth (MOD) for each gas, you will learn about the two types of Oxygen Toxicity, symptoms and treatments and you will learn (and hopefully get hands on experience) how to analyze...

wet or dry for warm shallow wrecks?

Are we talking technical diving or recreational diving? You mention 150 feet and separate gases (only required for trimix really) but the question is pretty basic for a technical diver...? :) Drysuit - IMHO - could be WAY too warm during deco in 72 degrees (depending upon your tolerance) and...

Is Truk Lagoon only for advanced?

Very true - a 19 is miniature for slinging. I use one for drysuit inflation on deep trimix dives and have it mounted against my backplate. I've had to sling 4 80's before and in the water - you hardly notice them.

Is Truk Lagoon only for advanced?

You were stating it as if it is a regular practice for them to do this. But, I am sure that they did this for you. :)

    What age for tech?

At 5m you will not have more than 20min or so as long as you are doing accelerated decompression. Our profile for diving the AJ-2 Savage aircraft in Subic Bay at 226fsw had our last stop on 80% at 18min. When the reality sinks in is when you are doing your trimix dives and when you leave the...

Is Truk Lagoon only for advanced?

YES! That was hilarious and I could hear Sam calling out the nickname he gave me "Oh Cabin Boy!!!" (long story)

Is Truk Lagoon only for advanced?

ABSOLUTELY FALSE!!! Sam, Madison and Mike were down there on single 80's when we were there and had hung a bottle at 30 feet. So congratulations, you survived with 1000psi left in your tank. Now what would have happened if something had gone very wrong???????? NOT SMART!!!

Is Truk Lagoon only for advanced?

Agreed Agreed Agreed!!! Yeah I swear that guy actually PRODUCES air while he dives!!! We used doubles the whole week for redundancy since we were pretty deep down in the wrecks but I was surprised that they let single tank divers do that!

    Backup Buoyancy?

I think the better way to answer your question is with a real world scenario: You just finished a LONG dive on your steel 120's and are quite a ways into deco. You start your ascent in a mild current that carries you over a deep wall (like Cozumel) when your wing suddenly goes south. You...

    What age for tech?

Wow - let's get this train back on the tracks!!! Where are you heading to do your tec dives? I did my tec and trimix courses in Subic and La Union and went back a couple of years later to do my instructor. Who are ya diving with? I am so envious!!! As for pre-requisites, you can look...

Is Truk Lagoon only for advanced?

Your 19 will not provide much redundancy just FYI. Do the math: If you drop into cargo hold one on the San Francisco Maru you will be about 185fsw, which equates to about 6.6 atm. YOU WILL BE NARCED. Your SAC rate if the poo hits the fan can easily be as high as 1 cuft/min. You will most...

Newbie questions about tech diver opinions

Like I said, there are ways to do it....... BUT I also believe in Natural Selection. Although if I see someone I taught doing something stupid I'll smack 'em in the back of the head! :)

Newbie questions about tech diver opinions

Doubtful - I look at someone forcing their opinion about how to configure their gear (without a valid reason other than that's what the book says) as being similar to the guys in the ties and white shirts knocking on my door. Like I said, DIR has some great stuff, just don't ridicule...

Newbie questions about tech diver opinions

In my opinion, technical gear configuration falls into 3 categories: Safety - Does a change in the gear configuration cause a potential safety issue? (swing gate clips - aka suicide clips, etc...) Muscle Memory - If you find a configuration that works, stick with it. That way if you need...
