Opinions on Salvos as DIR lights

I did notice that you can get the Salvo lights with EO connectors for an extra 75 euros - I assume this fixes the problem? By the way (to those who have mentioned it), apart from JJ and Barry probably no-one knows the truth of the theft issue so let's not go there.

Thanks, is there any particular advantage to having the ballast on one place of the other. I guess having on the head makes the head more bulky...

Salvo Rebel vs. Havoc: What's the difference?

I'm looking on the Salvo website but can't actually work out the difference between the two Salvo brands, Rebel and Havoc. Does anyone know? Which is suitable as a DIR lamp (or are both)?

Opinions on Salvos as DIR lights

I'm considering getting a Salvo - probably the Rebel 21W HID + the 15.6Ah Li-ion battery pack. Does anyone have experience with these lights and are they suitable for all aspects of DIR diving (particularly effective signalling)? TIA.

    Drysuit for buoyancy control??

That's just three ways of saying the same thing. Yes, but the issue here was whether the drysuit could be used for buoyancy control. We're not talking about 'quite a bit', but enough to balance 4.5kg of gas in doubles and perhaps twice that on a dive with stages.

    Drysuit for buoyancy control??

There's a big difference between a bit and doing your buoyancy with your suit. I like to put a bit of air into my legs to help with movement, but double-12s contain 4.5kg of gas - you cannot balance that with a drysuit and remain either comfortable or in trim. I'd also point out that this is...

    Drysuit for buoyancy control??

Yeah, you only have to look at the standard DIR trim to see that putting extra air into the suit would be ridiculous. The lower legs and feet are the highest point and that is precisely where that air wants to be. Putting more air into the suit than needed to prevent squeeze is just going to...

    Valve drills and light signals

Well, I'm not going to start second-guessing GUE instructors. It's simply my understanding of the tech pass that it means you are ready to take tech/cave training (not necessarily ready to pass that training (any more than you need to be ready to pass fundies to take that). Does missing your...

    Fundies and no more?

Hmm, so option #3: "Took fundies but failed to learn from it" would apply here then? :D

    Valve drills and light signals

At fundies level? Nope, you are probably going to go to your buddy's long hose and thumb the dive. Valve drills are basically a task loading skill at fundies level and also start building the skills you need for tech and cave diving but they don't, at this level, really provide you with a full...

    Valve drills and light signals

The main purpose of the valve drill in Fundies (as explained by my instructor) is simply to task load the hell out of you so you can learn to control your buoyancy and trim while doing other complex stuff. You will most likely pass Fundies with some minor faults in the shutdown procedure, but...

    Valve drills and light signals

Why were their lights stowed? Your light (in DIR diving) is not just for illumination, but is an important communication device. It should not be stowed except perhaps during the ascent when you may need your hands for other things and are, in any case, all facing each other and can communicate...

How do you judge or form an opinion on gear you have not tried?

Not really. To take the flip-up fins, I think it's a pretty objective opinion that the piviot points and the catches on the fins are potential failure points. You are therefore adding an extra 6 potential failure points to your equipment by using them (plus, they seem to have a strange button...

Total Newb - Some Basic Questions

Well, the idea of having the tabs removed comes from wreck and cave divers who regularly have to squeeze through tight openings and between entanglement hazards. In those circumstances it is a very good idea to get rid of as many potential snags on your equipment as possible. It's not a bad...

How do you judge or form an opinion on gear you have not tried?

Well, these fins, for example, don't solve any real-world problem (they are a solution in search of a problem, as the saying goes). On the other hand, they do add some new and unnecessary potential failure points to your dive equipment. This is the case with a lot of new dive "innovations"; you...
