    VPM vs BUHLMAN

I'm not quite sure what the 'benefits' are of the two different models. For most recreational diving they produce pretty similar no-deco limits and both have excellent track records for avoiding DCS. If you're trying to decide which you want to use for your diving then I would say either is...

    Dive insurance

Very wise, when you consider a helicopter rescue followed by a ride in the chamber could easily set you back $20,000 or more, and isn't covered by standard travel insurance. Definitely worth getting the DAN cover.

    PADI Physical requirements

Sorry to be blunt, but if these ridiculously easy requirements are difficult for you should consider a different hobby, or at least put off the course until you have spent some time getting into shape.

To drink the Kool aid or Not drink the Kool Aid

Which is very different than saying Halcyons haven't been sold with their metal inflators for years. I can think of a couple of shops here which have them on the shelves right now.

    Diving and flying?

Hmm, I'm guessing they didn't really explain decompression issues in your OW class. Decompression problems occur when moving from a higher to a lower pressure (e.g. sea-level to aircraft pressure). Moving from lower to higher pressure is not a problem, so you can step straight out of the plane...

    No crotch strap??

Yeah, put the instructor in a set of steel doubles without a crotch strap and hang him upside down in the water. He will then become enlightened.

Opinions on Salvos as DIR lights

Things get a lot closer when you put dry gloves on. :)

Opinions on Salvos as DIR lights

I looked at the thumb loop, but it does kind of get in the way of the focus lock screw. You can always move the screw to the other side but then it's more annoying to use. I figure that as I have no scooter I don't see why I need to make life more difficult with a thumb loop.

Opinions on Salvos as DIR lights

Hmm, lemme think: Halcyon: €1,700 Salvo: €1,100 + metal Goodman handle €35. Still don't see the case for a Halcyon.

To drink the Kool aid or Not drink the Kool Aid

With Halcyon it always seems worth asking for a discount on the marked price. They seem to be a bit hot on getting suppliers to stick to the RRP - at least in the shop window. Also, with any Halcyon wing I'd get it with a different inflater. Sorry, but those metal Halcyon power inflaters suck...

Opinions on Salvos as DIR lights

Complete with crack! and it hasn't even been in the water yet. Also got a weird piece of elastic strapping with it for no obvious reason. C'mon Salvo - get rid of this piece of crap and put a proper Goodman handle on there.

    Bluewater Ascents

Yeah, I don't think you should be planning to do blue water ascents in a dive (except a training dive) but it's a skill you need to have in case everything goes pear shaped and you need to do one. Not doing blue water ascent practice is kind of like not doing OOG drills because no-one should...

    Did I take it wrong?

Doesn't seem too smart. If a tank is going to blow up then it's going to do it while being filled. VIPs are more for the shop's benefit than the diver's.

Opinions on Salvos as DIR lights

Having finally got a Salvo, I must say it seems to be a great light. The only spoiler is the cheap plastic strut for the Goodman handle. Mine actually came with a crack in it where the screw goes in. Fortunately, I bought it from a good shop (Divingniknaks) who have agreed to replace it with an...

Euro Dive Centres: How will you deal with the 'M26' rule from August?

Hmm, doesn't look like there's many dive centres here to respond. From the rumours I hear around it sounds like the UK and Netherlands will largely ignore the new standard; the Germans will embrace it wholeheartedly. No idea what other countries might do...

    Keeping your buddy close

It is so wrong. - It is just a quick fix for sloppy buddy contact. Fix your dive skills by improving them. Not with a bit of string. - In the event of an uncontrolled ascent it transforms one casualty and one rescuer into two casualties. Not a good situation. - So many entanglement issues...

Seacure mouthpiece and donating your primary

You might consider going back to a primary + octopus if this is a real problem for you. During the time that you are on your backup reg you are not in a position to properly assist an OOA buddy. Either you have your primary clipped off in which case you need to unclip it before you can donate...

Seacure mouthpiece and donating your primary

Quote: "Squeeze the “Manta wings” together and insert mouthpiece into your mouth. Let wings open up against the inside of your cheeks." Just perfect for those OOA situations! I can't see this one finding its way into the DIR equipment list either.

    Your computer --- a survey

What dive computer do you use?: Mares M1 (BT mode) Is it an air-intergrated model? Ugh, no. Would you recommend it? Yes, cheap, good display, backlit, user changable batteries. What was the deciding factor for your decision to purchase this one? Price. The one biggest drawback of the...

Euro Dive Centres: How will you deal with the 'M26' rule from August?

In theory, dive centres in Europe can only fill tanks with an M26 fitting with mixes > 22% O2 from August. I'd be interested to hear how the dive industry is actually intending to deal with this.
