Cancel dive trip due to torn ACL???

As I've posted elsewhere, I have a completely divided left ACL and no problems with diving (and I'm a frog-kicker). Basically, the ACL is there to prevent over rotation of the knee; diving, especially with a flutter kick, really doesn't put any rotational stress on the knee. I've run a marathon...

    Diving and an ACL Injury

I wouldn't worry. I snapped my ACL about 15 years ago and I decided to live with it rather than risk the surgery and go through the six month rehabilitation. I've not had any problems with diving a couple of times a week for years. Edit: I notice someone raises the concern of tank weight. Well...

Please critique gear choice for the wifey

Yeah, I really don't understand the purpose of these computers. They don't have the features needed to be real tech dive computers but they have loads of stuff a rec diver will never use. I assume they're just aimed at people who think loads of features are cool but wouldn't cough up the price...

Difference between tec and rec fundies cards?

Out of interest, what's the difference between tec and rec pass fundies cards, given that it doesn't specifically say either on the card ; or is this just something GUE keeps a record of?

    Computer configuration

Mine has the excellent option of turning all the damn beeping off. It's the next best choice when I can't just put it in bottom timer mode.

Volume of air in tank at a given pressure/temperature

Of course, we could get picky and point out that these are ideal gas laws - real gas doesn't quite behave in a linear manner, though for diving purposes it pretty much does (with the possible exception of people with 300 bar tanks).

    No crotch strap??

I find the best technique is to use your head (literally) for all the valves. I generally rest my wrist against the back of my head and then use my head to push my hand/arm into the right position to comfortably turn the valves.

    New bottom timer

That's an expensive bottom timer. ;)

Please critique gear choice for the wifey

Well, if you're looking for a regulator that you can use everywhere, including cold-water and under tech dive conditions then the choice pretty much comes down to Apeks, Scubapro and Poseidon. Personally, I find Poseidon too fiddly and over engineered - getting them serviced can be a nightmare...

Fin Question - Which suits my need best?

Actually, I'd say if you're looking to get your legs into the best condition for diving then a combination of weights at the gym and running (or similar) would have better results.

    New bottom timer

Well, I'm sure you can find the Uwatec still in stock at many places for a while yet. I do have a slightly unusual suggestion - the Mares M1 or M2. They have a bottom timer mode which includes seconds display (great for those 30"+30" ascents). They have an "always-on" backlight mode and easily...

Please critique gear choice for the wifey

Fair enough, but then why not come in with a question that details your goals in diving and ask what sort of gear you need? Just posting a listing of all the most expensive and gimmicky items on scubatoys.com without even saying what sort of conditions you'll be using them in doesn't really come...

Titanium knives - the dive gear that says "more money than sense". ;) Really, you are a dive shop's dream. :shakehead:

I can't hear with my hood on!

Lights. Great big lights with powerful spot beams. Makes signalling to each other nice and easy. 21w Salvo's for preference. :)

Safe to get lots of certs right after getting OW?

AOW yes, Rescue no. You really need to get some experience and get your buoyancy properly under control to get the most from the rescue class.

    Why not air?

You can always use the reverse EAD calculations. If you make a dive to 8m with air just write 10m on EAN32 in your logbook. Fully DIR compliant :)

    The 20 Skills Broken Down

Yeah, this is always a bit of a silly one. Basically you should check buoyancy as usual and then increase weighting by the weight of the gas. PADI is not very clear on all this...

    The 20 Skills Broken Down

Check buckles comes under Releases. For the BCD: - Check LP hose is properly connected. - Inflate until over-pressure valve opens. - Check inflator hose pull-dump. - Check deflate button. - Check all other pull-dumps. - Check oral inflation works.

    VPM vs BUHLMAN

GF? Gradient Factor? This allows you to tune Buhlmann models for greater conservatism by reducing how close you allow your profile to come to a compartment M-value. There's a lot of good intro articles over on Rebreather World - Rebreathers for Scuba Diving - the next step about all this stuff.

    Diving and flying?

Hmm, I've not heard that and if it's correct I'd love to know their reasoning. If anything, you have less nitrogen in your body after a flight because you will have been off-gassing to the internal pressure of the aircraft. It should actually be even safer to dive straight after a flight (though...
