    Cleaning up an old plate

I'll second the use of denture cleaner. May need to soak for several weeks depending on the condition of the plate.

    DrySuits

I used a neoprene Poseidon for the last 8 years or so. Overall I like it quite a bit. Occasional small leaks from the wrist seals which I am sure need replacing

    Warning to new divers

All true. At least -for the most part-they are all positives

    Staying Alive...

Finally got around to reading this book. Definitely would recommended it to anyone who dives regardless of their skill level or experience. I learned quite a bit.

Wetsuit storage -- hanging or folded?

I hang my wetsuits but roll my drysuit because it is much heavier

what kayak should I look for

I have the Hobie Odyssey that I use for fishing but would not hesitate to use it for diving. For the reasons noted above, it is a 2 man Kayak that can be used solo and can hold quite a bit of weight, with stability. As also mentioned, the OK Malibu 2 is often recommended and may be a good...

    Gear for New Wrecker

I use stiff fins (XS Scuba Turtles) for NE wreck diving, and find that they are slightly heavier than standard lightweight fins. This can be a small advantage in avoiding an inversion when using a drysuit. Without the heavier fins I would need ankle weights when diving dry.

    Vanished by Wil Hylton

Just finished Vanished. Overall a fine read as a good blend of history and adventure. Not much in terms of diving though and I would have liked to see more pictures, maps or illustrations.

    Knife Mounted on BCD

I'm a big fan of the simplicity of the XS Scuba shears/knife combo as well- in addition to a small BCD mounted knife.

NAUI Master Diver vs NAUi Divemaster

Comfirm the specifics with the instructor that you plan on doing the DM cert with. In addition to the skills that you mention above, I recall having to do several additional pool skills and longer swim distances.

NAUI Master Diver vs NAUi Divemaster

remember that in addition to the on "on the job" training and final test, there are required pool skills for divemaster and depending upon your level of fitness and swimming skills could be challenging.

    Scuba Diving Magazines?

I enjoy Wreck Diver Mag. I believe there are 4 issues a year.

    Shadow Divers by Robert Kurson

I read it when it first came out and since then passed my copy onto 5 or 6 non divers and they all liked it. Great read-diver or not.

    iPhone Marine Weather app

I frequently use the National Data Buoy Center from NOAA for ocean conditions. Once your know your "local" buoy number, you can get hourly conditions such as air and water temp, wave height, wind, etc. The water temp is surface temp not at depth. National Data Buoy Center ---------- Post...

Oct 6th 2013 - Emerald Wreck off NJ - water temps at 80ft?

The surface water temps off the Jersey Shore can change quite a bit from day to day depending on the wind, current, etc. However the bottom temp is generally consistent within a few degrees during the season. The larger variances are due to seasonal change such as winter vs. summer. This...

    Under water camera for diving.

I've used 2 pole mounts. One is the UK which is approx 8 inches long and the other is the Sealife which telescopes to a much longer length which I believe is 48 inches. Overall, I have found to prefer the shorter mount, especially is you want to snap pictures with the GoPro. The longer mount...

    Spring Straps?

I use spring straps and would recommend them. My only caution would be the sizing, which is contingent upon the thickness and depth of your boot. I found that there is not really a correlation between strap size and boot or fin size. For example, my fins are XL but the straps that I wound up...

How long does it take to drown?

Sebastian Junger describes the drowning process in scary detail in the book The Perfect Storm as was the likely outcome of the crew of the Andrea Gail. I read it probably 15 years ago and still recall how vivid the description-including the timing-was.

    Under water camera for diving.

I've used a GoPro 2 with dive housing several times and would recommend it. Havent heard anything about the GoPro4 yet.
