Question Spring Diving Late March 2025 (Suggestions?)

Oh, you can still get in the cave (and there’s line in there), but I would very much not advise it. System is super unstable.

Question Solo Cert for Technical Dives?

Ginnie in Florida explicitly allows solo diving if you’re Full Cave (or higher).

Does anyone have a status on Buford Springs?

I heard rumors that boardwalk repairs etc were pending but maybe the end of January/February. We'll see. Given how long it took to get P1 back in commission after the 2023 hurricane, I am admittedly skeptical. Just hoping they get it open again before summer rolls around it browns out again for...

    Valve orientation

Chiming in to say that I’m a petite lady with very good gas consumption, and I love the size of an AL40; they’re a nice little bottle. Small and lightweight, easy to sling, and still have a significant air reserve; even if I don’t need all of it, 1) my buddies might and 2) I’d much rather have...

DIR- GUE SDI/PADI AOW worth it?

Just wanted to note that the upcharge for PADI AOW (rather than SDI) is probably because PADI charges instructors/shops a rather hefty amount for materials and student registration fees - I think for AOW it's currently around $180 for eLearning, $130 for traditional classroom, with some...

    Suggestion App for ScubaBoard

As a gentle voice in favor of an app….we’ve talked a lot about scuba diving as an aging community of divers, and how to bring younger divers into the hobby. Right now those younger divers seem to be congregating at Reddit’s r/scuba. I’m a college prof - the young folks are on apps, whether we...

    Bare Evoke 7mm sizes

This is an old post, but responding for others who may find it searching the forum. Bare Evoke suits are VERY stretchy; I can comfortably wear one or (less comfortably but it works) two sizes down from my regular size. For height and inseam, you didn’t want to go too small, but other...

    Suggestion App for ScubaBoard

I’d use an app; I don’t care for the mobile interface and rarely navigate to it on my phone. My guess is that younger demographics (which are underrepresented on scubaboard) are also more likely to use an app.

Question primary dive light inquiry 2025

Nope, the CX3 uses magnetic charging; never need to open the light (which I love, bc I have fluffy dogs and their fur gets everywhere). And seconding Lorenzoid’s love for the DGX600 lights too - I have a little fleet of them!

Teric owners, have you required repair or replacement service?

Love my Teric…battery started dropping after about nine months/several hundred dives, and that has accelerated noticeably. I finally sent it in for service (battery replacement) about 14 months after purchasing. When I first got it, my Teric would drop about 10% with each dive, and hold a...

Dive Talk Academy. There is a new Sheriff in town.

And Gus (the younger one) also appears to count each time you surface at a sink as a separate dive. Eg, in one video he counts a dive from Orange Grove to Challenge as two dives bc they surfaced in Challenge…

Tec-focused classes vs self training bouyancy

I agree with folks that the best way to become a better diver is to…dive with better divers. This can be through paid coursework/compensated one-on-one time with an instructor. It can also be through informal mentorship. I’m a psych prof; seeing what other skilled people are doing and imitating...

Question primary dive light inquiry 2025

    1. Agree with Jim, the Dive Rite CX3 would make a fabulous primary light in open water; you can adjust intensity from very high (almost 2000 lumens) to very low (a couple hundred lumens). A cheaper option that I’ve been very happy with for open water are the DGX600 lights from Dive Gear Express...

Is it better to be tall or short in scuba diving?

In open water? I don’t think it matters. Taller people may have advantage finning, but shorter people tend to have better air consumption. Average-height people are most likely to find gear that fits off the shelf. I will say, I’ve personally found being small to be a nice little advantage...

    2024 Diving Recap

    1. A good year….lots of local diving and hit a few local Florida “bucket list” dives I’ve been wanting to see - Spiegel Grove, Jackson Blue, Vortex, Morrison, etc. 2. 242 dives, including 99 cave dives 3. Work travel took me to San Diego, so I got to do my first cold water west coast diving...

What should a tall and skinny beginner do?

Look at Bare, Fourth Element, and Henderson. Measure yourself and compare your measurements to their size charts - they all have extended sizing beyond simple S/M/L.

Oceanic Geo Air vs Shearwater Peregrine - Please help!

I dove with an Oceanic Geo 2 for years, and loved it; I still have an old one I use as a backup or lend when folks forget theirs. But as soon as I went Shearwater, I realized I was never going back. If the AI really matters to you, the Shearwater Tern (watch style rec computer) and Peregrine...
