Moku Manu? Does anyone dive this site?

Sunday would not be good. You need a day with variable winds, no North or East swell, and a decent period of slack tide. Just be patient and it'll come.

Moku Manu? Does anyone dive this site?

Here's the cave Weinerdoggs was talking about: One of the nicest dives on the island, bar none. The deep ledge on the outside is spectacular, too - it stairsteps from 80-90' at the top down to 200' with tons of black coral all the way down. It's difficult to dive here for several...

    Operational chamber now on Maui!

How experienced are the operators in the diagnosis/treatment of DCS cases? Some of the for-profit "alternative" chambers on Oahu are pretty sketchy. Will DAN really send you to this place? It'd be good to check up on this, just in case.

300 ft Dive, Who Is This?

Catherine is right - a lot of people do far more dangerous things than these guys and don't get picked on like this. Motocross racing, hang gliding, skateboarding in traffic, etc. A lot of free divers are killed every year, too. Doing these dives on a single air tank, while obviously less...

Helicopter maybe <24 hrs after diving?

The odds of getting bent here have got to be up there with being hit by lightning. Even if you went straight from the dive to the helicopter, chances are pretty good that you'd be fine. The "no flying after diving" rules are meant to account for far more stressful profiles than a single dive...

Helicopter maybe <24 hrs after diving?

There is practically no chance of you getting bent from that.

    Oahu Dive Shops/Operators recommendation

I don't have a problem with parking at See in Sea - although there are few stalls it's nice how you can back your vehicle right up to the shop for loading. Even if the stalls are taken, you can just block someone in and move your car if needed (easy to do since the stalls are right in front of...

    Oahu Dive Shops/Operators recommendation

1 - Island Divers is on Hickam AFB, so they can be difficult to deal with unless you're in the military. I tried using them a few times and found it was too much hassle to be worthwhile. If you're in Makiki (so am I) I'd recommend either See in Sea or Breeze Hawaii for gear/tank rentals. Both...

    Super Ferry

That'd be a good small business idea once the ferry is better established. Door-to-door interisland deliveries.

    Super Ferry

Are those protesters still going at it? Oddly enough, everybody I've talked to who's actually used the superferry is from Maui - it sounds like it's more beneficial to your island than ours.

Which shops offer technical diving in Hawaii?

See in Sea does 100% O2 fills and custom nitrox mixes.

    Super Ferry

The superferry's not practical for ordinary travellers - it's unreliable and expensive. Flying and renting a car is still cheaper & easier. Although I'm a supporter of the superferry, I don't see myself ever using it. The people who really benefit from it are businesses who need to move...

Unfair Maui Rules May End Scuba Instruction! We Need Your Help

Try looking into the Big Island - it's a spectacular place for diving and much nicer than Maui IMO. I like Oahu a lot, but it can be difficult to earn a decent living here as a dive instructor.

Unfair Maui Rules May End Scuba Instruction! We Need Your Help

Wow, Maui is really messed up. First they have Snorkel Bob and his crazy aquarium fish hysteria, now they're trying to shut down scuba instructors too! Al, are you dead set on Maui, or can you come to a different island?

Whoohoo! Don't see this too often....

Guinea Fowl Puffer or Spotted Puffer, depending who you ask. You're probably very familiar with the normal black & white version: Arothron meleagris, Guineafowl puffer There are actually two species in the pacific with the yellow phase - A. meleagris and A. nigropunctatus. Of these two, only...

Whoohoo! Don't see this too often....

Cool! I've seen a couple with small patches of yellow, but never full yellow ones like that. They are apparently more common in other parts of the pacific - we import them quite regularly from Christmas Island. For those who don't know, this is an abnormal colour phase of the spotted puffer...

New bill to limit fish exports

Aquariums are not for everyone, but for those of us who enjoy them there's no substitute. It's like the difference between having a pet dog or cat and going to the petting zoo! Fish have an incredible amount of personality, and taking care of them day to day is an irreplaceable experience...

New bill to limit fish exports

Snorkel Bob has always promoted himself as an environmental activist in order to draw attention to his business. I don't think there's anything wrong with that as long as it's for a good cause, but in this case he's spreading blatantly false information. I don't know if he honestly believes...

New bill to limit fish exports

This is a messy business indeed. I work as an aquarium fish collector here on Oahu. I also have a degree in marine biology from UH, am an active scientific diver, and have participated in a number of research projects involving coral reef conservation, fisheries monitoring, and marine...

    Tritan's Trumpet Migration

Some thoughts: Kidspot: Regarding the original topic, Tritons Trumpets are usually solitary, but helmet shells often congregate in groups just as you described. That's probably what she was thinking of. MakoMike: I've heard from someone at DLNR that there was a minor population bloom of...
