    Scubaboard Surge 2017 Cayman Brac

Elena, The Sister Islands are pretty much my second home. Although there are not nearly as many fish as in the Keys (there are enough to make it interesting), the visibility, and large areas of relatively healthy coral are superior to here. And, in the Keys we have "roll offs", there they have...

    Suunto Vyper Battery Life

I usually get about 400 dives from a Vyper battery. But, I never use the backlight. At night, I usually take one of our Gekkos or Zoops, since I prefer them for night dives.

    Cayman Air?

I travel through GC airport quite often and would not even think about trying to make a 1 hour connect to the Sister Islands. Around mid day, security can be really backed up. For example: During my most recent trip,a group of 6 women who were ahead of me managed to tie up both security lines as...

    Buying Used Regulators?

There is no Aqualung Micro. There is a Micra and a Micron. The Micron second is much newer, and IMO is a far better regulator. The Titan name is usually used to designate a first stage, since a number of different seconds have been sold with it. I suspect that the octo is a Micra, which...

    Cayman Brac In The Winter

Cayman Brac is an island. There is always a lee somewhere. Since the resort and the cut face south, the winter northers do not usually hinder the dive operations. But, the prevailing winds are from the east and southeast (as they are in the Keys), and those winds can be strong at times. I...

Update on Brac Beach and Cobalt Coast Resorts

It looks like a Newton 46. The 42 and 46 are essentially the same except that the 46 has been stretched ~4 feet near the center of the hull.

    Replace Suunto Favor with Zoop

On our Favor, date and time are always displayed. You are correct in that it is either a dead unit or dead battery. Since these are rather robust units, I would suspect the battery. The battery, while not designed to be user friendly to change, is not too difficult. You can find a battery on...

    Replace Suunto Favor with Zoop

Aside from the fact that the Favor is an "air only" computer, without a pc interface there is at least one difference from the Zoop-Gekko-Vyper. Having dived these (we have 1 Zoop, 1 Vyper, 2 Gekkos, 1 Favor) and the Favor side by side, I find that the Favor is considerably more liberal in NDL's.

    GCM to CYB Question

"Incompetent and inefficient"--yup. Some years ago, our usual route to Little Cayman was to fly from Key west to Miami and then transfer to Cayman Airways (booked with them) for the trip to Grand and Little. One day when at the gate in Miami, the Cayman 737 was late and we and some others we had...

    Cayman Brac

Great post Kathy, but it is Cayman Airways that services the Sister Islands.

New line of computers from PPS

Did AL actually buy PPS, or have they just contracted with them to build their computer line?

    Questions about the Cayman Aggressor

On Little Cayman, at least, CA is only supposed to moor on double pin moorings--2 pins into the bottom with a chain between. They do occasionally break a mooring line, however, and it does seem to take an inordinate amount of time to have it replaced. The day boats usually always move after 1...

    Zoop scratches

The Zoop comes with a plastic screen protector installed. It is very easy to change, but do not be surprised if you break off one of the "ears" when removing the old one. We currently have 2 Gekkos, 1 Zoop, and 1 Vyper, which all use the same screen protector. I do not usually change a screen...

apeks xtx40, aqualung legend, aqualung core for new divers

All of your choices are excellent. If set up equally, it is unlikely that you would be able to notice a difference in breathing. The Mikron mentioned above would breath equally well--with a bit more bubble interference. It will pack a little more compactly, but I doubt that you would notice a...

So what's with the new way of rinsing regs?

It is the same idea used by local fishing guides who run almost every day, never flush their outboard engines and have few internal salt deposition problems. Yet weekend warriors who do not flush often seem to have problems. In summer, when we dive a lot, our regs, all with diaphragm firsts...

analog vs digital gauge (SPG vs Air Integrated Dive Computer)

Steve, I think that the idea of holding the purge open when pressurizing the reg comes not from the spg, but from the reg's first stage. And, of course, someone decided if it is good for one it is good for the other. Anyway, the old idea is that since the first stage seat is open when not...

Are 100cu/ft AL tanks common in rental shops?

noj, I spend quite a bit of time diving in the Keys and Caribbean. I don't know that I have ever seen an AL 100 in rental. AL 80 is the norm, but most shops have Al 63 or even AL 50's in rental. Renting a smaller tank for your wife might be a solution until you get your air usage under control...

    New Second Stage Seat

Thanks Brian, Do you remember the price of the kit? Also, when the kit is installed, does the second stage have the seat saver (pressure release) feature that Zeagle advertises?
