    Tip for OW classes?

rofl, because people are in the scuba training business for the excessive profits. I do it because I enjoy it and I enjoy introducing people to the sport. A tip in the form of a $20, a gold star, or just a - Hey, thanks a lot for your help, we had a good time, let's me know my efforts are...

    Tip for OW classes?

Why should they need to? If you can't finish in the time allotted, why shouldn't you expect to pay for extra instructor/pool time? Anytime you are hiring someone to provide a service, if you need more time, you expect to pay more. Its not a bad idea to be clear about it upfront, but I don't...

    Tip for OW classes?

The instructor or the shop should be covering the DM - unless these are open water boat dives and the DM is crew. Then, I could see expecting a tip. I'm a DM and when I help with classes, I'm paid by the instructor - just about enough to hope to break even on the costs to participate in the...

    Zipper wax

I use this stuff: Trident Zipper Wax LP22 with reviews at scuba.com It seems to last longer than the zip tech stuff in the plastic tube.

Thoughts on this setup? Apeks XTX50

I didn't say anything about price in this thread? Actually, I said I can't comment on price - I've never priced out an airsource so I don't know what a good price is on one. FWIW, I used to live in MN and Aquaventure generally had pretty good prices. The next time you are up in the cities you...

Leisure pro now authorized scubapro dealer

I spent $600 + modifications of about $200 on hers and $1500 on mine. Call it $1150 each. BC is ~$350. Regs about $600. Computers $500. Mask/fins/snorkel $200. So about $2800 each. I may have been a little low on my earlier estimate, but not much.

Thoughts on this setup? Apeks XTX50

I also can't comment on the price, but the Apeks is a solid reg and should be easy to find support because it is resold through Aqualung here. The airsource is fine. I used an SS1 for a long time and was happy with it. Just be sure to practice switching to it for out of air drills if you've...

The point of our training level wasn't to imply I know better because of my training level, but to provide a reference to evaluate the training costs in my estimation. We have obviously spent more money than just open water because we've taken many more classes. I think I spent about $2500 on...

A percentage off is irrelevant if the price is inflated to cover that. You still spend up overspending even though you got a "discount." If you spent $8k after your good guy discount in 12 months, I sure hope you got a couple trips, because I don't think I've spent $8k on my kit, my wife's kit...

There is no such thing as free stuff. You or someone like you paid for that stuff in inflated gear prices. I'd rather buy things at the best price, and if I decide I want a Stahlsac travel bag, I'll pay for it in an honest way and not hidden underneath in other costs.

Additional DM liability while on Vacation??

PADI pro check and the rec cert check are completely separate. If you look me up, you'll see I'm a rescue diver and my specialties. No indication I'm a DM unless you run a second check on the pro check system. I suspect most places that look you up will just do the first and won't know you are...

    tank ?

You don't need volume to calculate time remaining for this dive. Its a constant that cancels out. You don't need to know the specific SAC rate. Just the rate at which the pressure is decreasing, the current ambient pressure (depth) and the pressure remaining.

    tank ?

Right. It might be doing a SAC rate calculation for you. It would need the volume to do that. It might also just be noting it for your log.

Wrist vs Watch style + please help me narrow down my list

I like huge. Its easier to see and use. If I want a watch, I'll buy a nice watch. I am currently diving a Vyper Air and had a VT3 before that. Both are great.

    Halcyon SPG numbering

Sure there is. They could say (1) there is a reason and here's what it is, or (2) its just an error in the printing and it doesn't mean anything. The response above is pretty useless actually.

I know, I know! Where will you get your fills if you buy from the evil internet retailer? I never thought the grey market thing was a big deal, but I second the suggestion of calling. Sometimes it helps, sometimes it doesn't, but its worth a try.

Lube for Octo to First Stage ?

Years back I bought a "single" use pack of trilolube for about $5. I stuck a toothpick in it to close it up and put it in a sandwich bag in my save a dive kit. I can probably lube 1000 orings with what is in that single use pack you need such a small amount. It is expensive, but you don't need...

Is an SPG necessary with a wireless computer?

SPGs fail too. They can stick, they can flood, some little piece of crud can get in the teeny tiny hole and stop them from reading. I guess you'd better get two just in case. Every piece of equipment can fail. As long as you understand what can happen and what to do if it happens, there...

Is an SPG necessary with a wireless computer?

If the SPG is a necessity, why is it that I've never had one and don't need it? It's a useful tool, but it isn't a necessity. At least in my experience, with a proper predive check the wireless transmitter is sufficient.

    Undergarment recommendations for COLD water

I just throw mine in the wash every once in a while. We have a front loading washer and its pretty gentle on clothes. It even has a gentle button. It still works fine. Am I shortening the life of it - maybe, but I'd rather replace it a few months early than stink for miles.
