First "save" as DM. Sort of...

Yes, she said that if she had realized what the problem was she would have wanted to continue the dive. As it is, she had no problem with the outcome and was looking forward to the next dive of the afternoon. Looking back, I could have pointed at both the primary SPG/computer showing the...

I know how to take criticisim... I agree I could have done better. I know NOW it was a mistake showing her the 0 PSI guage but it seemed logical to me at the time. The whole point of posting as many details as I could remember is to learn from others with more experience than myself what...

First "save" as DM. Sort of...

Hehe... I just redid my pony as a stagemount. Didn't think of that angle till now, but mounting that way also prevents any confusion like what happened on Saturday as well. I dunno about having a new diver use one that way though. Back mount lowers task loading but one must be carefull if...

First "save" as DM. Sort of...

A: The "sort of" was that I was simply buddy diving with a new buddy (although it was at the request of my instructor), not specificaly DM diving with a class. B: I did a buddy check with her at entry and looked at her gear when she had the minor freeflow mentioned. We then floated at the...

First "save" as DM. Sort of...

I had my first "interesting" experiance at Dutch springs this weekend while divemastering (and it wasn't even part of a course...). My instructor was working with 2 students doing an "Advanced Nitrox" course. One of the students had brought his girlfriend who was an Open Water diver with...

Do you have a dive sticker on your car?

3 on each side window, 3 on the rear and a chrome "scuba fish" on the tailgate of my blazer... From various diveshops, PADI & DAN stickers. I never have SCUBA gear in the truck unless I'm in the truck with it so gear theft has never been an issue for me... Only ever lost a backup light...

    panasonic housing

HI, I'm looking into the Panasonic PV-DV953 (US vesion of the MX5000) and also am interested in a housing if someone can point me to a decent one for the Cam... I'm also looking at the NV-GS100K which is the latest (japanese) offering and replaces the MX5000/MX6000 in that line. It should...

    Help with a video camera

You might look at Pinacle Studio 8 for video editing software as well... I think it's about 100-150 for the software package. I'm not sure as I got a free version with my vdeo card (9700 pro All-in-Wonder 128Mb) and then it was $50 to upgrade to the full version (to download a patch file...

    Gas management

seems a bit complex... All you really need is average depth + total time, SAC in ft3/min (this is tank independant and why I NEVER try to figure SAC in PSI). (depth/33)+1 = ATA ATA*SAC*minutes = approximate gas usage in ft3 in metric I suppose it would be something like SAC in...

    Travel...airlines...TSA....a rant...bear with me

My Dad almost got shot in an airport in asia once... He and my stepmother were on the way home from the Philipeans and as they put their bags through the x-ray machines, the checker gave out a yell and several guards with machine guns sourounded them... It took a while to straighten out as...

    Travel...airlines...TSA....a rant...bear with me

If at all possible, ship the tanks and stuff a few days early... (UPS/FedEx/Etc...) If you have a trusted person to receive them at the other end, this works well. My budy and I each have a large Pelican case. We have the foam cutout to hold 2xAL40 bottles, the valves (removed and bagged...

    others setting up your gear

WHAT? I can get someone else to take my fins off at the ladder? Why didn't anyone tell me that before now? I dunno if it's really a PREFERENCE. More just our ignorance of this service even being available... ------ I can't recall a single dive I've ever done where I...

    Pre-Information

There's a shop about 6 blocks from me. I've bought a few small items from them but... I regularly drive over 60 miles each way to a shop I DM for sometimes on weekends... There's a second shop about 30 miles in almost the exact opposit direction that I do my tech training through as the...

    Un-Nerving Diving Experience....

You said, it happened each time just as you passed through the tubes and cleared up soon after exiting them? Have you ever experienced any claustrophobia in the past? That might possibly have been a contributor to the overall effects you felt. between "knowing" you had the beer (wether...

    Max. depth on Air

I can't argue with you there. It's not something I ever plan to repeat. On the flip side, I now recognize the effects of narcosis in myself much better. Before that dive I would have sworn I had never been narced. Looking back, now that I KNOW for sure how it feels, I know I was somewhat...

    Mixing Brands

I'd say Mares is prety good equipment from my experience with it. I used to have a Mares v12/2nd/octo/console setup. I traded everything in but the console for credit on buying an Apecs ATX100 setup with 2 atx100 2nds with no 'octo' as I decided I don't like them. The ONLY reason I...

To pony or not to pony

Good on you! One other thing to consider is any local 'rules' that seem to have nothing to do with anything but paranoia. I originaly bought my pony ONLY because the local NJ, diveboats insisted that you had to have one in order to dive with them... Even though I use it sometimes for...

burning eyes - defog or sunscreen?

Hi Greg, I've never used anything but spit in my mask. I've had stinging eyes from sunscreen several times... Like above, I've had minor stinging from the saltwater itself but that always goes away after a minute or so. The sunscreen sting gets to be enjoyed for the whole dive. ;-0
