What we don't see down there...

One of the benefits of scuba travel with a good group is that they will often have some pre-travel activities where you can learn more about the place you are visiting. Our local dive shop here in El Cajon (The Dive Shack) put on a very informative series of emails and evening meetings prior to...

    Individual Rights, and other Myths

Note: Your quote mistakenly runs two of my sentences together, so I edited my previous post #90 for clarity. You seem to be using a classic strawman argument by indicating that the alternative to doing stupid things is intrusive government regulation. In fact, the alternative to doing...

    Individual Rights, and other Myths

Yes, I said I thought the ARGUMENT was childish, etc. I didn't call any human being a name. Acually, I did say something about diving recklessly, twice, in post #1. This thread is about whether a diver has the "right" to dive recklessly. I say "no".

    Individual Rights, and other Myths

I just wish people would stop saying "You have the right ..." and replace it with " you have the privilege and the responsibility ...". And I think Dennis summed up my feelings perfectly when he said: "Please don't screw it up for the rest of us." In my view, that is the message we should be...

    Individual Rights, and other Myths

Ouch! But it is certainly true that we Americans are still a little touchy about our rights. Any idea where that came from ...?

    Individual Rights, and other Myths

Wayne, I am not advocating "collective action" and I did not call anybody names. What I am objecting to is the IDEA that all divers HAVE THE RIGHT to dive recklessly. I think that IDEA is childish, arrogant, and wrong. And I believe that people should stop and think before they utter such...

    Individual Rights, and other Myths

Here you seem to be asserting the "individual right" to dive however you wish. Correct me if I'm wrong here - I don't want to put words in your mouth. Wikipedia has an interesting discussion about rights: Rights - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Most dive locations I'm familiar with...

    Surface support station, whose responsibility?

I keep a spare tank and regulator on my boat, and I have thought about hanging it at 15 feet for just-in-case situations: After all, stuff happens, and I have come close to running out of air. But in San Diego kelp can be thick and vis poor, so there is no guarantee I will be coming back up...

Wayne, somehow I don't see you as promoting reckless, stupid diving. Just the opposite, in fact. So I'm guessing you just misread my post.

Geez... you try to start a good fight, and they end up holding hands and singing Kumbayah. (Sigh) ... I miss the good old days on Scubaboard.

    Individual Rights, and other Myths

No, I'm not for more legislation, I'm for more personal liberty. I want scuba divers to be free of any and all regulations, and I want scuba businesses to be healthy and unregulated. And I think the way to achieve that is to focus on our responsibilities, rather than our rights.

    Individual Rights, and other Myths

Trouble is, those "individual liberty" people who want to engage in risky behavior all come running to the government teat when they get hurt. Then they lawyer up and go boo-hooing after everybody else.

    Individual Rights, and other Myths

Some pretty savvy people here on SB have recently defended the principle of "Individual Rights", making the point that divers have the right to dive any way they like, as long as they don't harm others. This is a version of the good old American ideal of the rugged individualist exercising...

What we don't see down there...

That is a great photo, Bob. Diving in Fiji last year we were led to the top of a bommie where the guide pointed to a spot under a sea fan, and there was a Peacock Nudibrach. Incredible little thing, we spent a long time looking at it. We never would have seen it, or many other things, without...

What do you expect from other Divers?

I have no "expectations", but the best thing other divers could do for me is to do a checkout dive before getting on the boat, and this is especially true with guided drift diving. Jumping off of a dive boat into a four knot current with a group of other divers swimming hard for the bottom, is...
