Why did you go Tech, or not?

Goodness, I'm having a hard time keeping up with all the new labels. Seriously, I don't think I have insulted you - why all the anger and invective?

    Individual Rights, and other Myths

DaleC, with all due respect, I couldn't disagree with you more: Re health care costs: These are skyrocketing out of control partly because of lifestyle choices like smoking and poor diets. I have been one of the guilty, and because others have had the courage to stand up and say something, I...

Interesting question: I have the feeling some places are more regulated than others....

Hunh??? The only "required certifications" I'm aware of are OW, and Nitrox if you plan to use it. And to tell you the truth, my wife and I have all the cards, up to and including Master Diver, and it's kind of disappointing when nobody asks to see them. :D

Need some good tricks for dealing with sea sickness.

Over the years I have taken lots of friends out on my boats, and a certain percentage of them - I would guess about 20 percent or so - get seasick. A lot of times they blame this on the flu or too much fun the night before. I dunno... I always keep an eye on my passengers, especially new...

Why did you go Tech, or not?

I'll admit I have a great fascination with tech diving. I think it is natural, in any human endeavor, to want to advance to the next level, just "because it's there". But I don't have much opportunity or desire to dive wrecks or caves. I DO think there is still an awful lot for me to learn...

I don't either. I don't think anybody does, but we may be moving in that direction. Any cop will tell you driving is a privilege, not a "right". Like our highways, our oceans and lakes are regulated by the government, and whether we like it or not, they can tell us what to do, and how to do it...

    Individual Rights, and other Myths

One of the trends in international scuba diving has been the protected areas where fish populations thrive and divers can enjoy a natural, unspoiled environment. Governments create and police these underwater parks and levy fees for park entry, local businesses and populations benefit from the...

Well, that is not strictly true, because we have had several posts from you, which I enjoyed and "liked" and agreed with. And we have had posts from one or two Canadians, who are - technically - not Americans, except when they need their health care delivered with some alacrity. And we...

    Individual Rights, and other Myths

I take your point, but hubris is not an exclusively American phenomenon, nor did we invent it. In any case, this sort of quarreling among friends is disagreeable, so I think we should just blame everything on the French.

Better, but I'm afraid you still don't have it. Maybe you could understand my comments better if you weren't trying so hard to discredit them?

If you are referring to the "TSA Got You Down?" thread, no, I did not start it. I did post on it, but your characterizations of my positions are, sadly, wide of the mark. I think if you carefully read this entire thread you may get a better understanding of what it's about.

Better yet, you could set the limit for beginners based on their individual capabilities - i.e. "You can scuba dive to twice the depth that you can free dive." The logic there is that a diver can be confident that she can make a CESA because she has demonstrated that she can swim that distance...

    Individual Rights, and other Myths

Well, the 60-foot limit is not a government regulation, it is a PADI guideline for new OW divers, it makes a lot of sense, and nobody says "you die". Second, nobody likes government regulations much, but ... When folks get sick and die after eating listeria-tainted cantaloupe, everybody...

No, I am not talking about Jarrod Jablonski. GUE works hard to mitigate known risks and to provide for unknown risks. Yes, some "record setting" is different than others. The book "On the Origin of Species" goes into this in more detail. No, I don't mind paying into an insurance plan...

    Individual Rights, and other Myths

It would normally be an honor for me to be compared to Don Quixote, because he was a gallant and fearless knight, who gladly risked his life to protect the lady he loved, and he is rightly a national hero in Spain and an inspiration to me. And there are many interesting parallels between...
