The Scubaboard Murders: An SB Wiki Novel

Mma Constance Maputwse, proprietress of the Most Excellent Jamaican Detective Agency, sat on the edge of her bunk, her head reeling from the motion of the Dancer. A good friend of Captain Frank, she had confided to him that her detective business in Montego Bay was a little slow, and, at his...

The Scubaboard Murders: An SB Wiki Novel

The Dancer plunged ahead through the gathering storm. The wind gusts kicked up a choppy sea, churning up an oily, brownish-grey foam. The turn in the weather had made Clancy nervous. "Why are you sharpening that knife" she asked uneasily. In response to her question, I nodded across the deck...

The Scubaboard Murders: An SB Wiki Novel

"I want you to know that I appreciate your help." Clancy said. "When I saw that patch on your jacket, I knew you were the one." Her youth and innocence touched me in a way that was hard to put into words, and I felt the old protective instincts surge to the fore. I reached for my hip flask and...

The Scubaboard Murders: An SB Wiki Novel

I "Advanced?" I said slowly, not sure I heard her right. I was having trouble hearing anything, at that point. "Yes" she breathed, "Yes, they told me you were the only one who...who...." She broke off suddenly, looking at me intently. "They said you were the only one who could help me." I sat...

What makes someone an "Advanced Scuba Diver"?

Yes, but knowing you, you would be turning out very advanced OW divers... IJS

What makes someone an "Advanced Scuba Diver"?

To the foregoing I will add just one little thing (for which I will undoubtedly get a hot reception), and that is this: I feel that every time I dive at a new site, which is often, I am a "beginner". I don't recognize any landmarks, I have no idea what the currents are likely to be or how they...

What makes someone an "Advanced Scuba Diver"?

Sorry, Dennis, I had to punctuate! I just couldn't help myself! (Yes, I know the advanced editor did it) :D

What makes someone an "Advanced Scuba Diver"?

Bob, I can only think of one option: Swim to my buddy, and then, if the two of us cannot get back to the wall (e.g. - by swimming along the bottom or cross current), relax, and ascend. I think I would call that no more than "competent", for the simple reason that any diver with a little...

    I don't travel well.

Back when I was growing up, we used to just drink when we got thirsty. Poor benighted us. But that was before the Hydration Industry discovered that they could market and sell a plastic one-liter bottle of tap water for more money than a liter of gasoline! Since that discovery, we now know...

Moving from Warm Water Diving to Cold Water

Certainly the biggest issue with cold water diving is the bulky exposure suit and it's related buoyancy requirements. But there is a lot more than that. The following is from my own observations: Visibility off the West Coast is often measured in a few feet or yards, and in some places it can...

    The History of the ScubaBoard

I saw a similar discussion between you two a year or so ago, and I'm guessing that this has been festering for some time. ??? To tell you the truth, new members read these posts from the two of you and are very disappointed, because you are both respected a lot. I'm not so naive as to think...

Moving from Warm Water Diving to Cold Water

Hi hqduong, Like you I went from warm water to cold water, but I took lots of courses and was very glad I did, because cold water is very different. If all your training and experience has been in warm water, then cold water diving will present a number of new challenges that are outside your...

    Finding Stuff on ScubaBoard

I have spent hours and hours doing searches here with, at best, mixed results. It is much easier just to ask your question, and very often you will gain more information than you thought possible.

    I don't travel well.

I say get a tan because (1) it's been my observation that the most common "scuba diving injury" is sunburn, and I've seen many vacation divers who were pretty miserable because those lily-white arms, legs, neck and face got a large and unaccustomed dose of tropical sun. There are other (and...

    I don't travel well.

I'm a year older than you, I don't get motion sickness, but have always hated traveling, and those marathon trips leave me discombobulated for days afterwards. But I've picked up a few chestnuts here and there so I will offer them FWIW. First, research the flight options thoroughly. There are...

    Weight threaded onto Cam Bands?

That's what I did, but I used the small weight pockets sold by Oxycheq. I have one on each side, on the waist strap and slid up close to the backplate, and they are perfectly comfortable. They have velcro flaps and can hold up to a 5# weight.

    Individual Rights, and other Myths

"Agencies vs the individual diver" might be a fine topic for a new thread, but wasn't meant to be a topic on this thread. However - after re-reading the OP I can understand how a reader might focus on the idea of "individual" - after all, I used the word four times in the post! If the US is...
