    Dive Guide Cost Structure

Exactly. Would you (OP) expect a babysitter to charge the same price for three kids (you and two family member) as they charge for one (just you)? $50/dive for a guide isn’t out of line. I wouldn’t expect that person to take on the added stress of keeping track of additional divers for free.

Should I wear a snorkel or not

I used mine once when I wasn't planning to do so. Just stick it in a pouch and you won't even know it's there if you don't need it.

    Steel 120's

$$$ For the average operator that caters primarily to recreational vacation divers, I doubt very much it would pay off to have a bunch of tank options. Most shops that I've heard of that offer different tank options are pretty clear about that on their rental page. For operators that cater to...

    Brand new HP100 air fills

Sometimes it's not a matter of being unreasonable and "wanting a fill now." ex. For me...and I'm sure plenty of others that don't live in dive country...it's 1+ hour each way to get to a dive shop. I can't make the trip Monday to Friday during their business hours, so that leaves Saturday and...

    Brand new HP100 air fills

It’s the exact opposite around here. The vast majority of tanks that I see in this area are AL80’s.

    Brand new HP100 air fills

Or they could just be lazy and fill it to ~3,000 like every other tank they deal with that day.

    Brand new HP100 air fills

That’s par for the course (in my experience) with places that fill mostly aluminum tanks. 20 minutes to fill and go? That’s about what you’re going to end up with after a hot fill.

Getting rusty (in more ways than one)

I’m in the same boat OP. I only made a few trips to the quarry this year. Each trip, I felt like things were happening in slow motion. I spent a lot of extra time looking things over and I was not as comfortable in the water. 2019...got to make three little trips. I think there was maybe 1-2...

    Remove stains from AL80 tank

Yup. I’d resist the urge to try and pretty it up. Used dive gear looks used. You give into the OCD now...you’ll just have a never ending battle keeping them looking pretty. Personally...I like the “character” of used diving gear. It shows that the stuff has actually been used. Ex. My wing was...

    Subaru Outback ( ~2019 2.5 vs 3.6)

I bet the 2.5 would suck for that kind of driving. What surprised me is that they didn’t put a turbo in these until recently (replaced the 3.6 engine options). To me...a turbo boxer (ex. WRX or WRX STI engine) with a six speed manual would make for a fun wagon. Ex. Old Volvo V70R.

First dive at 40 meters - Newbies recreational

I’m in the same camp. I’d prefer to fart around “shallow” then go deeper just for the hell of it. Now if there’s a point to it (ex. Wreck dives or 100’+ down collecting on the Meg ledges)...sure.

    Steel 120's

The next size up from HP120 (HP133?) is the larger diameter. Same as the AL100, IIRC. I’m going to go out on a limb and guess that the reasons more operators don’t use HP120’s is: 1. Length of the tank (great for tall divers, but probably not for short or average height), and 2. Weight. They...

    Subaru Outback ( ~2019 2.5 vs 3.6)

Yes. Supposedly reliable and well balanced. That’s one reason that people have said to get the 3.6...supposedly less vibrations and engine noise.

    Subaru Outback ( ~2019 2.5 vs 3.6)

If I’’m being honest...the odds are extremely low that I’ll hang onto it long enough for that to be a concern. I don’t see it failing inside of 100,000 miles or so, so I should be fine. If it does fail...I would just sort a junkyard replacement instead of repairing the original transmission.

    Subaru Outback ( ~2019 2.5 vs 3.6)

Coming from a Ram 1500. It’ll be my primary/commuter vehicle for now. My intent is to get a new truck in another year or two and keep this to commute with. Lots of traffic in my area (eastern Virginia). I’ll never get another manual commuter vehicle (my last was a ‘13 Jetta TDI). Minimal...
