Can't read most numbers on an old steel 72 tank

Sounds more like vinyl coated than paint. They were hard to read.

    Need help disassembling J-valve

Keep in mind the J valve is not an on one second and off the next operation. It starts to restrict flow before it shuts off and it may not ever shut off completely. A better test is to determine at what pressure it starts restricting inhalation.

    What's in a regulator?

Considering I have been known to dive using homemade regulator parts this price thing is kind of pointless. Any regulator from a major brand is more than just good enough for recreational and most other types of diving.

    Transfill Hose Leak/Replacement

I built my hose with a tank filler on one end a quick connect on the other. I have a quick connect on my compressor outlet a a quick connect on another tank fill so it serves either as a fill whip or transfill hose.

    Transfill Hose Leak/Replacement

From the Op's picture I will say it is a JIC, either a -2 or a -3. A 1/4" NPT hose end can use an adapter to JIC female or male and may be the best option as it will allow connections using different adapters. I use braided stainless steel teflon lined hose with JIC ends.

    Transfill Hose Leak/Replacement

Any industrial hose supplier should be able to make a hose. It is probably just old and leaking where the fitting is crimped on the hose. I say old because I notice the outer jacket has deteriorated and fallen off.

Are there smaller neck size steels than 3/4”?

Bolt threads and pipe threads are measured differently, Pipe is measured by inner diameter so the thread which is on the outside is larger than the stated size of the pipe. Bolts are measured by outer diameter and more closely represent the actual diameter of the thread.

    Solo with no BCD?

So I guess flying a single engine, single seat aircraft with just an altimeter, air speed indicator and gyro horizon, no parachute, radio no GPS is out of the question.
