    Breathing from freeflowing reg

The earlier post about breathing from a free flowing scuba tank got me to thinking about something similar. I got my OW from SSI and while a lot of talk was expended on free flowing regs and how to stop them, no one suggested or had us practice breathing from one. A co-worker got...

Cruising to St Thomas & St Maarten Next week

This may be to late for your trip but I will post for the benifit of others. My wife and I dove with Coki on St. Thomas off the same curise ship. We set up all our trips independent of the curise line and saved a chunk of change. Just be back on time! or better yet early!!!!! Coki's owner...

All inclusive bahamas dive resort? Such a monster?

My wife and I stayed a week at the Fotuna Beach resort. The resort is NOT a high star-rated resort. It has one, maybe two resturants (and the second was at cost). It was a pleasant stay but not one that was grand. The resort uses tiny cups, so if you choose it take some big ones from home and...

What dive suit is needed in St.Thomas in Sept?

I dove there in April and used a rash guard and swim suit. Our male dive leader went bare chested in a swim suit. This was a beach dive but the water was warm and down to 60 ft no change in temp.

Battery life on Canon A series (esp A540), how well do they work?

Thanks for the replys, I will look into a A620. Those were some nice photos in the galleries Jam Diver. What brand strobes work with the A620? Are they Canon or a third party strobe? Above water I use Nikon cameras, D100, D200 and D1H. I am stuck with Nikon since I work for a newspaper...

Battery life on Canon A series (esp A540), how well do they work?

Looking to purchase a Canon A540 point and shoot as a vacation camera to take to places I do not want to take expensive pro-level DSLRs cameras. I am interested in the A540 because in addition to doing most of what I need above land, it can be put into a Canon housing for diving. While in...

    NC wrecks

My Local dive shop, in MD., arranges trips to NC wreck dive quite frequently. Most often going to Beauford, NC. These are boat trips, out and back in a day, to the clear gulf stream waters. The boat they charter is the Diver Down. Some of the dive mags showcase NC wreck diving as world class...

If you call a paid dive, are you out all funds?

The thread below about thumbing a dive is a great read. I got through about 1/2 the 8 pages before wanting to know this detail. If you thumb a paid dive trip, such as on a dive boat, are you simply out all the money or are you entitled to any type of refund? I am not about to let the...

So where are the other 2 sunken carriers?

In the post below about Greenpeace not being happy with the Oriskiny (SP?) there is the following statement: "We never really made it on the map as far as being a dive destination," Phillips said. But he predicted that would change, as one of only three sunken aircraft carriers in the world...

Give me definitions on a couple of terms?

One area not covered well in my classes were the simple definitions of some classes of diving: I know OW allows you to dive down to about 60 feet. AOW down to 130. I have often heard of divers going much deeper than 130. What is the technical term for this: Tech Diving, De-co diving? Or is...

Ears troublesome on second dive of 2

I don't have the fastest clearing ears in the world, I understand and deal with this. However, I have noticed a pattern that I can descend a lot better on the first dive of the day than the second. Last week I was diving in St. Thomas and noticed again my ears were harder to clear on dive...

To anyone that can offer help, my wife just got a good deal on a Southern Caribbean cruise leaving in just two short weeks. I want to get some diving in and am hoping someone can help out: We are flying into and departing on the ship from San Juan, Puerto Rico. We are going down about 3 days...

    First time Cayman advice?

Look for some advice on Grand Cayman, I am only in my second year of diving and I have had a few expenses come up that prevented me from doing a lot of diving in the first year. I am up to only 18 dives. Is this island good diving for someone with less experience? Or is it deep AOW diving. We...

When month does the Keys water warm up?

I realize this is a weather dependant question but based on a normal year about what month does the water get up to the high 70 low 80s in the upper Florida keys? I have a person in our dive party that only likes warm water and we would like to plan a trip to accomidate that person. If you...

    Early scuba gear

Was watching a James Bond movie last night, didn't catch the name as it was playing as I was flipping channels, but stopped because it had a major underwater scene. Premise was they were looking for a bomb and fighting underwater. I noticed that this early scuba gear had a interesting...

    Question About Full Face Masks

While on the subject: I have not looked at a full-face mask. I am curious how the inside is set up? Is their sometype of regulator you still hold in your mouth or is it like a hospital oxygen mask that is just strpped over you nose and mask? Seems like the point of these is to be able to talk...

    Pacific Ocean diving primer/Sou Calf.

I will be in Southern California the first full week of Sept. As someone that lives in the Mid-Atlantic states and dives Floridia and the Carribean, what will I find the Pacific like? I have often heard the Pacific is cold compaired with the Atlantic. What would temps be in the Channel...
