    Good mid-priced open-heel Fins - Opinions Please

Another nice thing about the jets is that you can buy 10 year old ones on ebay for cheap and they will last you another 10 years before you lose them. -Klaus

    wrist strap

I just picked up a used datamax sport that used to live in a console. Who would have thunk that a cable tie and a velcro strap would make such a good wrist strap? -Klaus P.S.: I can teach you how to make a bomb out of a roll of toilet paper and a stick of dynamite ...

Poll: DIR vs. Non-DIR vs. Undecided

I am almost DIR, but I dive an air2 and arguably break rule #1 by diving with safe, but non-DIR buddies. Does that make me a stroke? Yup, sure does. Am I still "mostly DIR?" I think so. While DIR is often considered equivalent to being pregnant (either yes or no), I find it more useful to...

jet fins spring strups - some questions of details

I don't use blocks to connect springs to my fins at all. I just hook the spring right onto the original hardware. A small piece of original rubber strap keeps the "buckle" locked closed (back) and prevents the spring from sliding around. Lucky for me, 11" springs fit comfortably without...

    Dive insurance

I was convinced to get DAN insured when I heard about a guy who incurred upward of $60.000 in medical bills after getting bent (undeservedly) and needing several chamber sessions. They covered all of it. I also like the idea of supporting DAN; they do good work, research, and training. -Klaus

What's the least expensive Carribean destination

According to current DAN guidelines, 18 hours is the MINIMUM suggested preflight surface interval after a multi-dive day. So you should be fine. https://www.diversalertnetwork.org/news/article.asp?newsid=258 I'm probably just jealous ...

    Air 2 good/bad ???

in reply to jonnythan: I dive a long hose, so I hand my primary regulator to my buddy, who can stay comfortably a few feet away. I put my air2 in my mouth and breathe a regulator that is a little different from the one I just had, and start a completely normal ascent procedure. I don't have...

    Air 2 good/bad ???

How do you feel about Scubapro Air 2 and similar backup-regulator & inflator combinations? I know that some people downright hate them, but I am not sure why. As far as I know, early versions had serious freeflow problems, but more recent generations do not. What do you think? -Klaus

What's the least expensive Carribean destination

Unless your return flight is late Sunday night you should seriously reconsider flying so soon after making 3-4 dives in one day. It's not worth getting bent on the plane. -Klaus

    Anonymous Posters

I have three thoughts on this topic: 1) I try to always question everything I read, whether the author has authority and experience or not. By question I don't mean "assume it is wrong", but rather "think it through." The value of a statement can be completely unrelated to the credentials of...

Those with BP/wing setup: How do you wear your weight belt?

I have tried wearing my weightbelt both over and under my harness and crotch strap. Wearing it over works much better for me both in terms of comfort and ease of ditching weight. -Klaus

Hi everybody, I have been benefiting from this board for several months now, so it is about time I "officially" joined. I am a marine biology PhD student at the University of Miami (Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science) studying early life stages of coral reef fishes. Lucky for...
