    To tank..or not to tank...

There are sources for these adapters. One is Compressed Air Specialties, www.scubacompressor.com 714-991-8800. Request a free catalog. The lightweight tank sounds like a good bet for portable air but to be safe you would need to adapt a regulator to step down the pressure, and that is...

I prefer this explanation, mainly because it agrees with my own experience: http://www.diversalertnetwork.org/medical/articles/article.asp?articleid=34

Freediving fins for Open Water Scuba?

Some folks like them for SCUBA, some don't. The long fins are not very maneuverable around reefs, they scrape and bump on things. They make turns more difficult. They are more difficult to board and enter, and pack. Be careful, there are vast differences in the flex and hence, power required...

    soda lime

Baralyme was used in rebreathers during the early days of diving. Like during WWII. Price looks about the same as "sofnolime". That would have to be checked against granularity and activity, or duration.

Yet another "What tank to buy?" question

Nate, I think your dive shop misunderstood what you were asking. When you mentioned 300 bar the shop employee probably thought that you were requesting a 4500 psi air fill or perhaps a Nitrox fill. I know what you mean about "religion". When the high priest speaks, the acolytes scramble to...

Do Dive computer get you bent more than tables?

Hi Allan, I looked into rectified diffusion theory, but just a bit. Sofar, what I've found confirms Dr Deco's remarks, eg, the pressure variations attendant to a diver's normal depth excursions do not incur sufficiently high frequency or amplitude to promote rectified diffusion of bubbles...

New to diving looking for new fins

Ice, you already have some advice to consider. Confused? Well, you should be able to pick up a set of Aqualung Blades or Mares Quattros for less than 60 bucks, including shipping. These two Italian made models are probably the best paddle fins in the world. Watch the sizing on Mares; a...

    sea urchins

I've had a few run ins with the black urchin common in south Florida and the Bahamas. There was one time off the Marquesas (between Key West and Tortugas) when I got ripped pretty good. I pulled out a bug and got 20-30 urchin spines broken off under the skin of the left arm. As always, it looked...

Dive Lights..What do you use and why??

I have a couple for special purpose. One is an Ikelite mini C light for lobster and abalone. The other is a Pelican Brite Lite 5000 for emergency, freeing up a stuck anchor at night. I have a third light which hasn't been used for 20 years. It is a wreck light for the Chesapeake Bay. The...

    Long term effects of diving

There were reports of bone damage(necrosis?), possibly arthritus. Divers experience sun damage such as cataracts, wrinkles and skin cancer. Bends can cause permanent disability. Hi oxygen PP may cause some unknown long term effect due to free radical chemistry. Very speculative.

    Oxygen cleaning manifolds?

Metridium, you are fortunate in buying a new valve which is O2 clean. Otherwise, cleaning a used valve is not rocket science as USD's lawyers and the CGA would have you believe, but it's not quite a cakewalk either. Oh, you don't need a "clean" room, special gloves and a chef's hat, but you do...

Poll -- Flathead VI vs. ScubaPro vs Oceanic DX4

The 550 is a neat little reg. It's a simplified version of the 600. It omits the auto anti set and adjustment knob common to the 600. This means the breathing resistance of the 550 is set by the factory. Since this is a balanced reg and has low spring tension, I doubt that the lack of anti set...

Spider, if the boot is hard to remove, try soaking the tank's bottom in a bucket of hot water.

    Some Assmebly Required

Netdoc is right about the lube. Furthermore, if anyone doesn't believe the manufacturer's torque requirements, then hear this: Go ahead and hand tighten a valve. Using a wrench I can turn that same valve at least another 1/8 inch. What does that mean? It means that torque is required to...

    Some Assmebly Required

Netdoc has it right, the valve has to be lightly wrenched and it must be metal to metal. Where are you guys coming from with all this hammer, kung fu and junk? And what about 75 ft lbs to tighten a tapered valve? That is OK for a compressor head bolt or such, but tightening a 1/2" tapered valve...

    Knighthawk or Ranger

DRS, maybe you should look at a Zeagle Scout. I haven't used one but they look similar to my BC, the Seaquest 3D, which is no longer available. Anyway, it is minimal, comfortable, packs tight and has plenty of lift.

    What are you paying for?

KTA, yes, the price differences are there for a reason. This is an obvious matter which pervades our market society. You get what you pay for. For more money you will get more complexity in the formm of external adjustments, and more internal parts designed to allow you to dive to 400 feet...
