Good luck to you.
Some advice I give to all DMC's is to work with as many different Inst's and classes as you can.
Try not to stick with just one Inst. so you can see many different teaching styles and "cherry pick" to devlop your own teaching/assisting style.
Have fun with it.
To me the stupid part (not just the dive) was when she swam to the other air source...
Why did you not escort her???? just in case....
And another Dive proffesional heard from.
The thing I want to adress here is the surfing/diving wetsuit.
Yes there are differences but not as big as you might think.
Neoprene is not neoprene, cheeper suits material has bigger bubbles so less rubber per given thickness ((think compression)That is why some 5mil suits are warmer than...
After 20 years in a dive shop... you should treat your customers like they have the gold you need to stay open.
Some of the problems I see are with the younger staff that think they are to cool, I also see this in the Whitewater Kayak shop I work in currently.
It was even worse when I would...
You have got to be kidding.....
The only 1st I know of that would over pressure an octo need to be serviced anyway...
oh but wait there were some of the older Posiden 1st that would cause octos to flow due to higher Line Pressure.
Iworked in a store for YEARS sometimes I would pop into...
The wind and the sea can tip this vessel...
But only YOU can tip the crew...
I have worked both ways as a DM/Inst.
On a liveaboard boat we were tipped some times alot some alittle, it seemed that if it was a shop group that had booked the whole boat the tips were good.
If it wasnt a shop...
Sounds to me like you should have been charged more for your class as you were taught how to deal with a gear malfunction. Most students never get to learn this skill set. Now you know what is a real problem and what is normal for caribbean type rental gear.
Whine whine whine boo hooo hooo is...
Santa Rosa shallow in Cozumel is a great dive and you can do the "deep" side as a shallow dive too.
To me Roatan on the North side has the best "shallow" diving I have ever seen the reef starts at the surface. Followed by St. Croix, then Bonaire.
Columbia River Knife and Tool makes what I would call the "best" knife.
It's called the Bear Claw.

EMS shears work great and so does the OMS line cutter it's like a seatbelt cutter with replaceable blades.
His knife sounds like one of the old Tekna's we...
An u/w paintball gun so I can tag all the stupid divers I see so eveyone else knows they are stupid.
A light tank like firefighters use but isnt negitave or bouyant.
Blue Water Night Drift diving in the Gulf Stream, not really panic but that boogy man feeling knowing the bottom and sides are a lonnnng way away if you lose the boat and there are alot of BIG things down there just out of vision.
Real panic is running out of rum after the dive.
Why should we even bother teaching either one.
Just tell your students to get in after the DM, stay above him then get out before he does and you'll be ok.
Remember to tip him well!!!
I think this way we could cut the class time down to just one day.
How many people really dive with out a...
As an Inst 90% of my buddys were/are Insta-buddies, so I just assume/act like they don't know a thing and I treat them like I would a student on an O/W dive. After a dive or 2 I relax (alittle).
I used to teach DS (Discover Scuba) and DSD (DS Diving) every other day The difference was the skill set DS was look thru this (mask) kick with these (fins) stick this in your mouth and breathe (reg) don't hold your breath in very shallow water (4 ft pool).
The DSD was done the same as PADI's...
Used to do them from the old Fredrickstead Peir on St Croix all the time 25-30 feet to be cool for the tourists but got smart and started tossing in the tank/bc then striding,
just check the current first.
Way better than climbing the ladder in gear up or down.
Never did it wearing fins would...
