My vision is poor at a distance, about 20/70. Is this a time to get contacts or are they problematic? Our waters are normally zero viz lakes and rivers; our targets are normally bodies and sometimes cars. Water temps go from mid-high 30's to 60ish, I'd guess.

Well, today was my first time in the pool with the team and we did a little bit of rope signals. It was cold, I was still learning the right rope tension and all I could remember is that 4 meant a problem on one end or the other.
I think we use DRI for obvious reasons. :)

While the experienced troops prepare their expert answers, I'll give some ideas based off other stuff I've seen from other areas. Remember that I'm brand new at this so you need to make sure it's right for you.
1. Offer to train as a demo for a school or public organization. Nothing keeps you...
I have the ERDI manual on order, as well as Butch's book. The DRI site looked good but they don't seem to have anything in this state or the next one over where I volunteer. Any DRI types want to send me a manual so I can compare? :)
Honestly, I'm jumping the gun in this. My newness is such...

I've gotten the GUE/DIR books and videos and gone through them, and have been to Extreme Exposure in in FL, their storefront HQ. From all I've seen JJ is a cool guy and not like the Cyber-DIR Nazi's that have caused many others to dislike...
Wow...when you guys answer you *answer*...
I can see I have a bunch of reading to do, thanks! I live near Charlotte, NC but am in the SC volunteer team just across the border. The folks there are all volunteer and though they have a way to go the drive is for safety and professionalism...
I see the correspondance course, though, um, who would you correspond with? I'm new to this and the only certifying agency I've heard of is ERDI. I would assume there are others but don't know which ones I should pay attention to.

Gary, as a "just voted in" member of a local volunteer team I'm interested in knowing what I can do; not only to avoid this myself but to help others on the team who may be heading that way. Any suggestions?

I'm applying to the local search and recovery team as a volunteer. I know reading won't completely prepare me for some things but the more educated the better. What are some good materials; books, web sites, etc, to read about PSD skills and activities?
