    Thirteen Lives

While on the subject of work by the Thai Rescuers, Dr. Harris has an interview podcast called “real risk” that is quite interesting. Not about the rescue at all, but the guy leverages the notoriety he earned to get an audience and access to a bunch of people who’ve done a bunch of interesting...

Are corded lights a thing of the past?

Personally, I also like the extra weight of the can sitting under my butt. Makes a nice little trim weight that keeps me in trim while I suck down the tanks, and I don’t have to add any weight to the harness with a 5mm. That weight is not very well placed if it’s on your hand.

Are corded lights a thing of the past?

The “everyone is using cordless” bit doesn’t seem to be true in Mexico caves. Corded can lights are very much the norm there.

Topics That Will Cause A Poop Storm

Clearly a trick question. OBVIOUSLY if you need more than 5mm you should be diving dry. Duh.

where would you live if you couldnt dive anywhere else

Playa del Carmen area for cave access. Ocean is a nice bonus.

    Thirteen Lives

I actually enjoyed this one a bit more than The Rescue,m. My non-diver wife got bored with that one and quit half way but really liked 13 lives, so that probably biased me a bit. I liked how there were a lot of tiny details, like their knuckles and fingers bloody after the dives. Reminded me of...

    Been busy diving

Don’t be so mad at the halocline. The salt water tunnels beneath it can be amazing. Hope you get to see them!

Dive knives when out with a DM

No titanium for me! Everyone knows that sharks have bad eyesight and poor coverage for tetanus shots. So, a machete so that they can see it - but it needs to be rusty so they stay away. I have had 0 shark attacks so far.

    Training time in Open Water

This sounds exactly like what my instructor referred to as “stress circuit”. Just sub Ginnie for cenote Edén.

    Training time in Open Water

TDI. And to clarify my poor wording before - the stress circuit was something we did on the first day of cavern, the land drills were recurrent throughout the course every time a new skill was introduced.

    Training time in Open Water

We did land drills and a “stress circuit” in the OW at the cavern entrance early in the cavern course. After that, it was all under the overhead in cavern/cave as appropriate.

Topics That Will Cause A Poop Storm

GUE seems to be popular lately. They are the cutting edge/They are stuck in the past, They are elitist assholes with only exploration in mind/They are super fun people who will dive with anyone when they are not training, Long hoses are overcompensating/Long hoses or death, Go for the...

    GoPro 9 housing "o-ring" replacement?

Awesome! Now I know, for the inevitable moment when I break mine.

Question How to attach stuff to lights?

+1 to attaching the boltsnap with nylon line. You can also use your computer or slate strap/bungee to attach the boltsnap to when you have it in your hand, if you are afraid to drop it. You can even just shorten the lanyard and tie it (or a loop of bungee) around your wrist and use that as an...

    GoPro 9 housing "o-ring" replacement?

Didn’t your housing come with a “skeleton door” that allows you to access the touch screen? If so, maybe the gasket on that one can replace the one on the full door? I haven’t checked but I would be surprised if they were different pieces.

A couple thoughts on grocery shopping in Cozumel

The elderly baggers are a thing across all Mexico, not just Cozumel. Not a “screw the gringo” type of scenario, if that makes any difference.

    Gear in Cozumel

Indeed! I wouldn’t put it so lightly if they were taking gear hostage 😅 Thanks for clarifying!

    Gear in Cozumel

The standard I believe is that the gear stays on the boat - even if it is your own gear they might take it and rinse it overnight so you don’t have to carry it to the hotel. You just take mask, computer, light and other small stuff with you. Still, each shop has their own MO, so best to check...

Why can't you make a living as an Instructor?

You mean me, specifically? Well, because I am not trained as an instructor nor do I want to be. Others make a fine living in the scuba industry though - so implying that no one can is a bit of a stretch. To be fair though, everyone I know who does well in the scuba industry is more than “just”...
