Question Equipment for Full Cave Course in Mexico

Most people do fine with 5 or 7mm wetsuits, but dry suits are also fairly common so you will probably be ok either way. One thing to consider, in that moment of the year you will be HOT when out of the water. Whatever you bring, it is better if it is something you can peel off easily between...

Experienced Divers: What are the most common "oh, crap!" situations?

Climb down, jump in the water and… bubbles. Is it a reg? A hose? A tank? Now you have to climb back up, de-kit, and change that &$@/)$! O-ring/hose/whatever under the jungle heat. Oh crap.

Closed New In Box Apeks DST/XTX50 Sidemount Set $1,375

Hi! What length are the hoses? And sorry if it is a dumb question, but by “shipped” do you mean you will cover shipping?

How much lead weights do you use?

5’10” - 164 lbs. Salt water, single AL80 with 3mm full and 2/5mm hooded vest, no backplate - 8lbs, can do 6 but I like the extra comfort. Fresh water, 5mm full, side mounted AL80 doubles with cave gear and can light - no lead.

Info What is the "best" fin?

The very best fins ever are yellow Avanti Quattro+s, because I like them and I say so and I am a person on the internet so it must be true

    Cavern To Full Cave Pace

You live there, so you don’t have a time pressure. Schedule the sidemount course asap, go on a few cenote dives. Feel comfy? Schedule cavern, repeat. The beauty of living there for this is that you don’t really need to care about the pace, plenty of time to just figure it out as you go and...

Question Dry suit sidemounters, how do you route your suit inflation?

That makes sense. I’m assuming the other way implies that you don’t plan to switch hose connections, and prioritize that over the flexibility. It’s a good question though, I’ll ask the next time I’m down there (or someone who uses it that way will chime in) - I dive wet so never gave it that...

Question Dry suit sidemounters, how do you route your suit inflation?

I don’t dive dry myself, but the standard for Mexico cave divers that I was taught was to hook up the wing to the left tank if diving wet. If dry, swap the wing hose to the other side and connect to the right tank, with the dry suit connected to the left. The reasoning is that your right tank...

    PDC Cenote Guide Recommendations?

Second this. I lived in Playa for two years and they ended up becoming my main shop. Great guys (Martin, Charly and Nico are great company for the drive as well as the dive), great divers, fair prices.

The Ultimate Mask - Beuchat Maxlux S

I would not mind trying one out! I’m not very concerned with looks, but those really do have a charm to them.

Question New OW diver and a vaper

While vaping is probably not helping, it is likely not the cause of your high consumption rate. Plenty of dive pros are heavy smokers and have good consumption. Breathing is also a skill that tends to get better the more you dive, the advice found earlier in the thread can help.

The Ultimate Mask - Beuchat Maxlux S

The Maxlux doesn’t fit me. My wife has one but it didn’t seal on my face, not even close. Fancy ones in general don’t fit me. Frameless masks with a single glass tend to have smaller nose pockets, so if they seal they crush my nose and if they don’t crush my nose they don’t seal. Low volume...

    Canister light

I clip it to my right shoulder d-ring when attaching my left tank, then move it to the left or, most likely, just let it hang down by the cable while I attach the right. Since I am usually leaning back a bit to do it the light head just rests on my crotch or on my left thigh.

    Swimsuit under Wetsuit

+1 for Arena jammers. Though any brand is just fine, Arenas are just cheaper than speedos and easy to find.

Interested in setting up a dive trip based out of SF

I’m new to the area, and just back from a trip to Mexico for one last dip in the caves for the year. I’m all for starting to dive locally! I’m in the “needs an intro” crew though, so useless as a source of information 😓

Things You Learned but Never Had to Use (or Had to Use)

Any type of gas sharing drill. Haven’t needed the skill in real life diving yet, fortunately.

That question again - primary light recommendations

If you are going to Mexico, I bought mine from a guys in Playa who builds Frankenstein lights. Mine is built out of an older Dive Rite HID head and canister, but made into a new led light. More burn time than I’ve been able to go through, bright and tight beam, and has proven sturdy so far. No...

    Best scuba advice you’ve received

“Slow down!” The other two were from my wife: 1. “Stop annoying me while I enjoy the sun and just go diving already” 2. “Forget about Puerto Vallarta, let’s move to the Caribbean instead!” Also, “don’t tell your mum we’re letting you do this”. From the guys who were running discover scuba...

Hi again, this time from San Francisco, CA. There goes the neighborhood!

Hi everyone! I've been on the board for a year or two, originally from Buenos Aires, Argentina and lived for a few years in Mexico City before moving to Playa del Carmen. I've just moved from Playa to San Francisco, CA so I figured a re-introduction was in order. I was diving pretty much every...
