Judging a diver's experience: logging number of dives and hours of dive time

It seems to be the locations and the clientele that go there, like vacationers with long gaps between diving and very limited diving histories in the first place or backpackers checking off the bucket list. I don't blame it on the operators, as they do try to pair people with similar experience...

    confused about prescription masks.

I stupidly kept my first prescription mask in the gear bag without putting it in its case. With gear bags getting tossed around, it eventually developed a crack. Luckily, like Julie T, the dive shop had some spare prescription ones that other divers had left. One was almost my prescription...

Judging a diver's experience: logging number of dives and hours of dive time

Certainly not everyone, but when you get the paired with insta-buddies that can't set up equipment, can't get down and when once down, swim off in random directions because they can't hold depth without moving, or head for the surface because they think they're out-of-air at 50 bar because of...

Judging a diver's experience: logging number of dives and hours of dive time

I think it's from one of those coupon books you get at Disneyland before the passes came. Tickets are A to E, depending on the ride. There must be a Dive ticket.

    Geo 2.0 - USB malfunction

I'm going to guess the cable margins are pretty high, so you could probably get another replacement at a discount, direct, as they seem responsive.

Maui in Late Sept - need an Op and any other suggestions

I've done the Hammerhead Dive twice. The first time, a hammerhead came up from the deep to check me out and got pretty close, until the rest of the dive group noticed and a bunch of GoPro sticks started coming at it and chased it away. This is what led me to do the outing a second time, where...

    Geo 2.0 - USB malfunction

Like tursiops said, Windows 10 has updated many times over the last year. The dive computers and cable have not, which is why I was curious about the OS'es on the computers. I would suggest trying the cable on another computer, not Windows 10, if cleaning out drivers and rebooting don't work...

    Geo 2.0 - USB malfunction

I can confirm that the cable itself (Sherwood Amphos, though likely same as the Geo) will "mount" without a dive computer present. It's a FTDI USB Serial Device. This is from GNU/Linux: [ 187.879432] usb 2-2: new full-speed USB device number 2 using uhci_hcd [ 188.096651] usb 2-2: New USB...

What equipment to own vs to rent

My metric was how many dives I was going to do and cost of rentals. Thailand, included. Indonesia, $30/day. Japan, Maui $50/day. These prices are for the full set, including wetsuit, mask and fins. If regs alone are only $5-10/day, then maybe just rent. For myself, I like that my regs don't cut...

Is Rescue training a turning point in diving perspective?

One time, the instructor, who was acting as a guide, navigated us pretty far from the boat, so he asked if I wanted a tow. I gladly accepted.

what's the current feeling on Miflex hoses - some years on from the recall, etc.

It seems like unless someone actually has some recent, degraded MiFlex hoses as proof, it'll likely be reports of problems prior to the original recall that keeps circulating and related. Your LDS may be trying to be helpful, but without knowing the details, it's just word of caution from...

Is it possible to travel responsibly (during a pandemic)?

I thought the whole Real ID thing was a conservative thing, to remove freedom of travel from those States that allow everyone to get a driver's license, regardless of citizenship status, like California. Did they forget?

Shearwater Teric why no password system?

When I dealt with Garmin, I thought they could locate the owner with the serial number since probably everyone registers the device to use with the Garmin apps. Maybe Shearwater users don't? It's funny to read about iOS and Android phone security when both OS'es took years to implement/force...

Sherwood Vision, help changing the battery

I've not seen this. Have you tried opening up the battery compartment and reseating the battery? Since you paid for the service, maybe take it back and have them do it again?

Shearwater Teric why no password system?

I found a Garmin fitness watch. I contacted Garmin to have them contact the owner or act as a proxy to deliver the watch to its owner. Garmin first thought I wanted the owner's info, so refused on that, which makes total sense. (I didn't want the info, just for them to get in touch with the...

    New (Additional) Tourist Tax

Indonesia had a fee upon entry, to be paid in USD, and a fee upon exit, to be paid in IDR. It was confusing to some people who weren't prepared, but authorities did have money exchanges on hand. Since then, the fee was rolled into the ticket.

    New (Additional) Tourist Tax

In many neighborhoods in SF, a private company was able to add a melo roos tax for street cleaning and "promoting" the neighborhood businesses. Why should residents be taxed to promote neighborhood businesses? Like you said, if they want more business, they should use their own funds. The tax is...

    New (Additional) Tourist Tax

$11 isn't much, even on top of $30. Here, in San Francisco, the hotel tax keeps getting voted up, and I keep voting it down. Average hotel price is something like $325/night, so it's already expensive for visitors.
