    Certification is costly

New divers don't know how to evaluate equipment, whether it's still viable or needs extensive repair.

Go Pro Hero 10 cannot turn on underwater

I had a problem with a Canon housing where the pressure at 20m pressed on the shutter button half-way, which put the camera in focus and hold mode, which prevented it from fully recognizing a single press and release, to shoot a photo. (It went from focus and hold to fully pressed, then focus...

Rescued after 22 Hours Adrift - Japan

Nope. I posted because it's about survival in open water.

Rescued after 22 Hours Adrift - Japan

I've done Kagoshima to/from Yakushima. It's four hours by slow cargo boat and two hours by high-speed catamaran. It's definitely rough over open water.

    PLBs Can Save Your Life

I guess the command center is in Houston, TX... "He used a GPS personal locator beacon, which he had been given days before, to trigger an SOS, which was automatically sent to a response centre in Houston, Texas. It notified the coastguard in the UK and Ken was airlifted to hospital in Fort...

My journey away from lithium-ion lights

I originally bought a DGX switch light, but the switch failed on first use underwater. DGX replaced with a twist light, at my request. I don't understand why there aren't twist direction indicators to prevent accidental floods.

    KEN'S COVID UPDATE #2 - I'M FREE!!!

Moderna boosters were just authorized at half dose of the original shots, 50mg instead of 100mg per shot. I know you'll ask for a booster shot, but some people, like some friends who are anxious, are willing to say they've received no shots, to get it sooner and will likely get a full dose...

    KEN'S COVID UPDATE #2 - I'M FREE!!!

True. The only thing we know, then, is that it's been a while since the shots and Pfizer did advocate for boosters, so it's a known possibility. The sporting events are wild cards, as it is mixing with a lot of people and LA has had a lot of community spread, so maybe there's just a lot of it...

Great to hear you're better. As for figuring out... what about reduced antibodies? How long has it been since your last shot and which vaccine?

Chernobyl divers - truth or legend?

I just finished watching the HBO miniseries. The final episode had pictures of the real people, follow-up on their lives, and noted where they took liberties. For another harrowing nuclear story, look up the Windscale meltdown. Similar issues... things were built not quite to spec due to...

What is happening in Singapore right now?

Highest vaccination rate, but majority of deaths still among unvaccinated and older people, and from the article, big clusters at nursing homes. How is masking there? It seems like community spread is pretty high. With vaccinations, fewer will end up needing hospitalization, but seems if...

Scuba in The Investigation Episode 4

It's excellent. It's from the investigators' and family's perspective, trying to piece together what happened. It's amazing what they were able to do. The scuba part was key in finding evidence.

When is it okay to abandon your dive buddy?

After being certified, I think I stuck to the guide like glue, as I've noticed many newly certified divers do. It did not matter so much what the insta-buddies did, as I would expect them to do the same, tightly follow the guide. We weren't familiar with the route, even with the briefing...
