How many Open Water divers buy gear?

I was certified on Koh Tao, Thailand, which trains about 10% of the diivers worldwide, from what I heard. Koh Tao is a big backpacker destination, so to make it easy for backpackers to get interested/certified, all rental gear is included. It seemed like only people who stayed to move onto DM...

Is it possible to travel responsibly (during a pandemic)?

Say this were to become widespread, do we go with the existing plan or do better containment?

Is it possible to travel responsibly (during a pandemic)?

We didn't have a government that tried to contain. We had one that was actively trying to deny and tell people to do the opposite of what was necessary, even overriding local jurisdictions.

Is it possible to travel responsibly (during a pandemic)?

Their populace are living as they were before the pandemic, except for international travel, yes. They're far closer to normal than the rest of the world.

Is it possible to travel responsibly (during a pandemic)?

Most people don't have the time to ingest research papers, nor be able to understand their contents. A link to them doesn't mean they were read and used to formulate opinions expressed. Lumping ABC, AP, BBC, CNN with Breitbart, Fox and HuffPost as all propaganda doesn't bode well for a call for...

Is it possible to travel responsibly (during a pandemic)?

In California, we still haven't gotten through 1b and I suspect that these group sizes in CA are much bigger than in other States, thus the different time frames even though 79% of delivered vaccines have been administered. It's probably the same for various counties.

Is it possible to travel responsibly (during a pandemic)?

It does seem that countries that immediately locked down hard contained the virus much better. Had everyone done that, then there wouldn't be this concern over/of long-term impacts on tourism, mental health or vaccines. SARS, MERS, Ebola were contained before they became huge problems. NZ...

Leaking mask - my personal experience

Leaking can help with unfogging. A little bit of water in the mask can be used as "windshield wipers". If the mask fogs, tilt your head down so that the little bit of water wipes away the fog.

Is it possible to travel responsibly (during a pandemic)?

I can't wait when people excuse the next pandemic death numbers as "they're just the compromised people from Covid-19"... the long haulers that are "just like with the flu"...

Some of the US States were doing what they could. The previous US Feds sound like the same as yours.

Is it possible to travel responsibly (during a pandemic)?

No need to repeat the wall of text. You asked why anyone should be concerned about others traveling. I explained it. Taiwan's government was/is on the ball. Other governments are not, so that's where the worry comes from. If your country had excess of 500,000 deaths, you too, would be worried...

Is it possible to travel responsibly (during a pandemic)?

Well, your government is preventing infections from entering your country, so yeah, you don't have to worry about it. Not all countries are doing that, so that's why people do worry if other people travel.

Pick up after yourself and others

In the city, I've witnessed people look around, then put whatever they have in their hands on the ground, even though there's a city trashcan 20 ft away.

DIVE DRY WITH DR. BILL #892: NO, MY OCTOPUS TEACHERS

Hi Dr. Bill... general question... One means of species identification is by location, as I've seen on iNaturalist. My question is, how do we know if a species has spread naturally or brought there by accident/purpose? Do we have established records enough to say that a certain species has...

Is it possible to travel responsibly (during a pandemic)?

We know the virus doesn't spread by itself. We know it's those long hauls that have brought variants. We've seen places like NZ, Australia, Taiwan, ??? control spread by limiting travel. We know the longer the situation lasts, the greater impact it has on economies and mental health. Yet... some...

Leaking mask - my personal experience

The funny thing is that your solution to a "weird shaped face which the most common mask do not fit well" is a Cressi Focus, which is a very common mask, also sold under other branding. I have two, a primary and a backup. I started diving with a specialized mask, Hilco, due to prescription...

    Taxi Rates

Due to expensive taxis in the US and Europe, I've shied away from using taxis in SE Asia. Well, one time, I was in Bali and was pretty pissed off with all the touts screaming 50,000 IDR for a ride, so I walked to the accommodations... 45 min in the hot sun with 40 lbs on my back and pulling 30...

DAN vs. Dive Assure for dive and travel insurance?

My understanding is that DAN Dive Insurance covers diving and they usually throw in some travel insurance features. DAN Travel Insurance is separate and is the typical travel insurance. I usually pair DAN Dive Insurance with World Nomads travel insurance, which has been cheaper than DAN Travel...

Is it possible to travel responsibly (during a pandemic)?

I have a college friend that I've been having weekly Zoom chats with, along with the rest of our group. He and his wife had a social pod to have regular weekend dinners with. They've been doing it for months. Two weeks ago, one person in their social pod got sick and tested positive, which...
