First Coz trip - need help planning

Sorry, maybe I wasn’t clear. I meant I hadn’t seen it on an Aldora boat.

First Coz trip - need help planning

I’ve never seen anyone use nitrox only on the second tank. Aldora generally separates nitrox and air divers. Profiles and dive times vary too much if some are using air and others nitrox. The only exception I have seen is for afternoon single-tank dives and night dives, when you have more of a...

First Coz trip - need help planning

I’ve spent a lot of time in the water at Villa Aldora in the afternoon and at night. It’s 10 or 15 feet deep, along ironshore, no real coral, but there are sponges growing on things. There is a lot of concrete rubble from past hurricanes, which actually make good habitat for all kinds of...

    Suggestions for short trip

I have a business trip to Bangkok coming up in January and I am thinking about staying in Thailand for a few days to go diving. I have never been to Thailand. I will not be able to manage more than three or four days for diving. Because I only have a few days, I’m looking for a place that is...

    1st timer to Cozumel

I’m just finishing up a 10-day trip, mostly to Cozumel, and a couple of nights in Cancun to do the whale shark snorkeling and fly out of Cancun. I normally fly into Cozumel, but got a particularly good deal through Cancun this time. If you are only going to Isla Mujeres as a jumping-off point...

    Upcoming Trip to CZ

The Aldora adventure dives are different, but several things have to come together to make it happen. You need enough qualified divers to make it worthwhile for Aldora to run the trip. Aldora wants to know you and see you in the water, so you really can’t just sign up for it as a one-day thing...

    Upcoming Trip to CZ

I think I’m up to 18 trips to Cozumel now, will be coming down in a few weeks, and have another trip planned. I’ve never been bored and have been to every site from Maracaibo to Barracuda, most many times, Islote on the east side, and unnamed sites on the east side. My focus has changed over...

In Cozumel now...worth a day trip to do whale shark swim or cenote dive?

I’ve done cenote dives twice - once from Cozumel and once when I spent a week in Playa. I’m interested in doing it again, but I can never tear myself away from the reefs and spend the long day to do the denotes. All four of my dives were in Dos Ojos, which was very cool, but I can’t do any...

Did you know that Splendid Toadfish vocalize?

I’ve been hearing them for years! Someone must have told me about them on my first trip to Cozumel. They start in the afternoon and it gets more frequent as sunset approaches. Remember how well sound travels underwater. They can sound much closer than they really are. Some other toadfish species...

    Dive with Hotel or Not?

If you stay at the Presidente, any dive operator can pick you up at their dock. I stayed there once years ago and dove primarily with another operator. My wife was not certified yet and she decided to do the resort course with Scubadu, so I dove with them a couple of dives to go with her...

    Trip report, Aldora, Mary Carmen

I like that dive, going through Los Arcos and up to the Shallows, but we’ve lucked out on the current. Maracaibo is always an NDL issue for me, even on nitrox. Gas has not been an issue with the big tanks.

    New restaurants.

“Mi Antojito” - it’s actually Venezuelan. I stopped by in the middle of the afternoon one day in August by myself. I was the only person there. They were really nice. Between my “poquito” Espanol his little bit of English, we mostly managed to communicate. The food was good and cheap. It’s a...

A couple of new hotels on Cozumel

I stay on the North side at Villa Aldora and quite like it. Aldora picks us up there. I’ve seen Dave Dillehay post that he can make some accommodations for people staying on the North side. In any case, if you can get free airfare and a free hotel room, it shouldn’t be too much of a burden to...

    Weather in February in Cozumel?

I have been there often in February. Nortes are not unusual, but I haven’t seen them every year. They usually seem to last a day or two. Since I started diving with Aldora, a norte usually means diving the east side rather than missing a day. Water temps are usually 78-80. I’ve seen 81 a few...

Female traveling from Atlanta, carry on luggage only

If you are not picky about brands, you should be able to find anything you need at Mega or Chedraui. They have all of those things. You may find some familiar brands, but there is no guarantee you will find the brand you use at home.

One day to dive near LA - Need advice

Thanks. I usually find shore diving requires at least a little local knowledge, so I think a boat trip will work better for this.
