    Diving recommendations for Cozumel

That might be true, but the dive sites are just plain deeper up north. There are no shallower parts of the reefs. If you go shallower, you’re in the middle of the water column.

Cozumel with Whale Sharks from Cancun

The boat left from the dock at Solo Buceo. I taxied from the Westin to Solo Buceo, which is on the property at the Hyatt Zika, behind a gate that’s locked at that hour of the morning. I told the security guy I was looking for Solo Buceo and he let me in.

March 2019 Cozumel Dive Trip Question Extradonaire

Wednesday and Saturday are the normal nights for night dives, might be different because it’s Carnaval. They will normally do a night dive other nights if you have four people who want to go. Again, Carnaval might be an issue. IMHO, the C53 is a waste of time and gas. It’s not that interesting...

Cozumel with Whale Sharks from Cancun

Last summer, I did exactly what you are contemplating. I spent two nights in Cancun because the tours leave early (6:30 or 7:00) and get back late (maybe 4-ish). I didn’t want to be rushing around or pushing the schedule at either end. This is vacation and it’s supposed to be relaxing. Like...

    Need SSI Check-out Dives

The last I knew, PADI was not a participant in the Universal Referral Program. A PADI instructor might do the checkout dives and then issue a PADI card, instead of returning the Universal Referral Program form to the originating SSI shop so it can issue an SSI card. A PADI card might not matter...

    Mayan Style

“Mayan Style” fish usually means Fish Tikin Xic. Achiote and sour orange are the key ingredients. Just Google it and you can find recipes.

    Favorite Breakfast Spots

I like Corazon Contento a lot. The chilaquiles negro are excellent, as are regular chilaquiles and eggs. I don’t recall right now if they have huevos con chaya, but if they do, I will have to get it. I first had it at the old museum restaurant some years ago. My wife got an English menu and I...

Air strategy for 4-5 tank dive days?

HP120s, 32% for the first, deeper dive, 36% for subsequent dives. Sometimes 21% with a steel 80 for very shallow (15 FSW or less) afternoon or night dives. Really need to use the nitrox to get the extended time offered by the big tanks.

Where to go in Cozumel to buy a new Mask?

Studio blue has a decent selection of Scubapro gear. I’m not sure if they have anything else. Aldora usually has a few masks in the shop, I think Oceanic.

Trip Report: Aldora/Villa Aldora/Food/Modified Bag Drag

My recollection is that they need four.

Trip Report: Aldora/Villa Aldora/Food/Modified Bag Drag

I did it once. Carlos Danger’s description is accurate. I will add that you have to do a fast swimming descent to 100 feet or more on some of the dives to hit the reef in a heavy current. In addition to everything else, you need to be able to equalize easily and descend quickly.

Finally Get to Go to Cancun / Cozumel

Exposure protection is largely a question of personal preference, but I would not say that a 3 mil is overdoing it. You’ll get a lot colder on the 75-80 minute dives that are common with Aldora. Temps should be in the 80s in November. I wore a 3 mill in July and August, when temps were no lower...

    Tipping DM in Coz?

Look, this is very simple. When you travel to another country, you observe the customs and practices of that country. In some places, a server in a restaurant will bring the check when it’s obvious you are done with your meal (typical in the US) and in others, the server will not bring the check...

Finally Get to Go to Cancun / Cozumel

The walk downtown is safe and generally well-lit. The terrain is flat, but you want to watch the pavement, which can be bad in spots. The Villa is about half a mile north of the plaza, so the walk isn’t bad. The Villa management (Chris and Chris) can always call a cab for you if you want. They...

Finally Get to Go to Cancun / Cozumel

The tanks at the Villa are all air. You’ll be diving in 15 feet of water or less, so it doesn’t make much difference. The dive is pretty good. It’s an ironshore mini-wall. Lots of sponges and stuff on the wall, but not much coral. Lots of concrete rubble from past storms, which makes pretty good...

Finally Get to Go to Cancun / Cozumel

Is that the Westin? I don’t think there is a Marriott-branded property in Cozumel. The Westin is pretty far north. It’s a nice area and I hear the Westin is nice, but it’s a fair distance from almost all the dive shop pickup points. If you want to dive with Aldora, they may pick you up at the...

Finally Get to Go to Cancun / Cozumel

My early diving experiences were in Cancun. Used to go there with my ex and her family. I actually got certified in Cancun. But it was definitely not a dive vacation. It was a beach vacation with a little diving. Reefhound has it right. It’s pretty fishy, but the coral formations don’t compare...
