Who Loves Ice Diving? I do!

OK...I just had to jump in here. I felt an overwhelming urge to educate the rest of you about a subtle difference in terminology. Anybody form Texas, jump in & concur. First of all...chili, with an "i" refers to something made with beans, and maybe meat, tomatoes, and various other...

    Depth / Nitrogen Narcosis

Signifant digits? Anyway, didn't read past Walter's post yet, cause it sruck the engineering chord in me. Fair amount of dives to the 80-95 ft range and a couple over 100. Don't feel it, but I'm sure it's there. It's probably got to d with that "I like Beer" thing. I'm sure I...

    Training Question.

Rescue class, some of the in water stuff was a lot more than I expected. The class/video wasn't much different than some of the other rescue/safety classed I've taken. How to deal with panic, first aid, accident management etc. But getting through the unconcious/non-breathing victim is a...

    Joint Pain and DCS

There's a sying that goes... "Life begins at 40...it's just too bad all the parts are wore out." I have a couple of old sports injuries that I've wondered the same thing a couple of times. But it has always been an inflammation of an old spot (and, coincidently, in cold water). Doc? Is...

Need tips on how to be a perfect "hostess"

Something that's often overlooked is that much of the diving industry is really a hospitality service. Like a Hotel, or ski resort, or restaraunt. Doesn't really matter what you're specifically "selling", the big thing is to try to anticipate the needs of the customer. You're going to...

    DEW Diving....Is this you?

And I guess he needed that 300# lift bag for that "kevlar wrapped 3/8" SS reel". It would weigh right at 120# plus. Too funny!

What is Advanced Open Water Diver???

Not that I've had that much exposure, but I've never been asked for an AOW card. And haven't had the log book looked at either, and a fair amount of dives in the 70-90 ft range, couple pushing 100+. I ended up with it as a function of a bunch of specialties. But, IMHO, the PADI-AOW is...

DIR-F class will now be a certification class

So, if this is a go, what about the classes held between now & then. If one takes the class, will it have to be reataken to get the card. There's one scheduled reasonably local in April. Would it be better to wait for the dust to settle and go from there?

    Padi Master Scuba Diver?

I'll end up getting the MSD as part of a package deal along with the speciaties I needed to finish the requirements. I was going to do the specialties anyway, so the LDS kind of wrapped it all up in one deal. The more I read & post here, the more I'm leaning toward DM. Wasn't really going...

    Elderly Divers?

There's an old George Carlin (I think) about how life should be lived backwards that runs along your train of thought. And ain't it the truth?

    Standards deficiencies

I agree 100% that the overwhelming majority of recreational divers will fall into this category, and that the PADI sytem churns these out like a factory, with great success. Your points are well taken in terms of what the goals of PADI organization are. I don't have a fundamental...

On average, Walter, how many class hours, how many pool hours does the average Y O/W program currently entail?

    Standards deficiencies

my point I want to clear any miconception. I WAS taught deco theory, and the gas laws, and how to use the equations, and partial pressures, and oxygen toxicity, and gas mixing, and how to use the Navy Deco tables if I had to, and how all of those things affect the body. And know what...

    Standards deficiencies

Don't confuse the Y program "Scuba Diver" with what Mike is referring to. Big difference According to Walter's post above, sounds like the Y program is still pretty in depth and comprhensive. Like you. buddy breathing was the "you take a breath, I take a breath" method, on a J valve. I...

    Bill of NO Rights

The following has been attributed to State Representative Mitchell Kaye from GA. The guy should have run for President..... "We, the sensible people of the United States, in an attempt to help everyone get along, restore some semblance of justice, avoid any more riots, keep our nation...

How long were you a "newbie"?

always will be. Drysuit was a rude awakening. 10-15 dives with it and I'm still trying to figure things out. Seem to learn "something" on every dive. Not always a skill, but something. Good habit for life in general, I think.
