How to Engage Younger People in Diving?

I'm 30, which is about the end of being a "younger person" and old enough not to be trusted (according to the Beatles). I started diving when I was 24. The answer is largely centered around economic issues. Inflation has doubled prices since 1989, but wages haven't grown anywhere near the same...

    How to travel with tanks

For single tanks, I point the valve to the rear so that I can immediately get a good grip on the handle when I'm loading/unloading. My doubles go into the trunk with the manifold towards the front of the car, because I load/unload those by wearing them.

A mask recommendations for a narrow/small face (adult)

It's on the expensive side, but I love the TUSA Visio Pro. The silicone in the skirt is very flexible and has made a good seal to more than a half-dozen differently-shaped faces when I've loaned it out. At least one person has converted from their prior mask.

GUE fundies training in the Southeast...? Need Instructor recommendations

I enthusiastically recommend @mer, Meredith Tanguay. She's a tremendously accomplished diver and one of the very best instructors. She made a huge difference in my diving by bringing insight (and solutions!) for my gear problems and great coaching to improve my technique. She teaches in Florida...

    Reggie Ross - December 24, 2019

I'm on the road for the service tomorrow afternoon. Six and a half hours left to go... For anyone who can't make it but would still like to leave a message in the condolences book, feel free to send me a message and I'll transcribe it for you when I get there.

    Reggie Ross - December 24, 2019

From Chris Brock, Reggie's dear friend: Hi everyone, I just posted this on my Facebook. If you would please share or create your own post so we might get the word out. Thanks. Our dear friend Reggie Ross passed away on December 24. His celebration of life will be Sunday, December 29, at...

    Reggie Ross - December 24, 2019

Oh, Reggie would definitely let students have it if they underperformed his expectations on a dive. The back-on-the-surface coaching that followed after such an episode was second to none. :)

    Reggie Ross - December 24, 2019

I'm deeply heartbroken to report that Reggie Ross passed away on December 24, 2019. From the limited information available at this time, he experienced a medical emergency in Ginnie Springs and died shortly after leaving the water. [EDITS: the original post stated that the incident took place in...

    Why O2 for DCS?

The lower boundary would be until resolution of symptoms. The upper boundary would be defined by an individual's susceptibility to oxygen toxicity as a result of hyberbaric treatment (see abstract)(scientific article, may have paywall), or a reasonable prudent approximation by some other...

Cincinnati diver dead after Spiegel Grove - Key Largo, Florida

On a public Facebook post (different from the one I originally referenced), a person claiming to be a former Rainbow Reef staff member provided the following information:

Cincinnati diver dead after Spiegel Grove - Key Largo, Florida

I found a FB post from another passenger who assisted in performing CPR. He didn't have many more details to share than what the news has reported, so my guess is that it was an unsurvivable medical event, even with a prompt rescue and resuscitation.

First drysuit for a beginner diver

I recommend against the Aqualung Fusion series - there are ongoing issues with manufacturing quality and suit durability.

Seattle Area Pool Sessions (DIR Focused)

I live in the U District and am frequently up to Edmonds Marine Sanctuary to dive. I'd be happy to go out diving with you. @wetb4igetinthewater is on the money with the recommendation for Eight. I had been diving dry for more than a year in a poorly-fitting suit and had developed some bad...

    7mm wetsuit Buoyancy

A common rule of thumb is about 10% of body weight in pounds as a starting point, usually another few pounds to adjust for individual innate buoyancy.

    Divemaster attire

There's a swimsuit seller on Amazon - Private Island Hawaii - that I love. All of their tops have sewn-in cups (no wrinkling! no migrating!) made of a light, flexible foam. The support isn't the same as a running sports bra, but pool sessions involve much less bouncing. The last time I looked...

We should get that stickied somewhere. It's a great summary of the cave training sequence and goals.

    Cave 1 / Intro Expiration & Limits

I think you're going to be hard-pressed to find anyone here who will tell you something other than "Full Cave." It's certainly possible to dive in caves independently without the terminal certification, but you're sacrificing the benefits of having comprehensive training in a notably hostile...

Will TDI shift to new cave training model?

The NSS model has compressed the number of levels (Cavern>Basic>Apprentice>Full to just Apprentice>Full), but attaining Full Cave still requires the same amount of training: a minimum of 16 dives and 600 minutes of accumulated BT. Cave Diver - NSS-CDS Training Program

Making a steel dive computer - input needed!

I want to co-sign both of these statements. I'm a female diver with small wrists and I want something that (a) fits securely, and (b) feels like it feels securely.
