    Recreational Scuba Deco Diving

In my case, I had an unlimited season pass for the charter boat and cost was a non-issue. People without passes were paying $180, or roughly $12/min BT. It makes much more sense in terms of cost, safety, AND fun to dive wrecks in the gray area between rec/tech as planned technical dives. I...

    Recreational Scuba Deco Diving

I was on the edge of RSDD-type dives in the last few months before I started technical dive training. There's a particular wreck in the area where the top deck sits around 130' (40m) and the sand is at 150' (45m). Recreational divers can enjoy short dips to explore the deck and the masts. I was...

    Drinking Buddies in Gainesville?

I'll be in town next week with one of my Chicago buddies to get some cave time in the logs.

O2 Bottle for Cavern, Cave or Deep OW

Are there any options for extended dives on doubles in Cozumel? If there's some way to do a two-hour drift with whatever small amount of deco, that's going on my bucket list.

Relocating to the Great State of Florida

The shambles of our remaining economy have kiboshed my plans to move to Florida for the next few years, because I wanted to buy land/build a custom house and I'm not going to do that until things even out. I'm potentially getting close to a post-grad school job offer, so I'm hoping to come...

    Great Lakes tech diving

Most of us follow along with posts on the Midwest Dive Buddies group on Facebook! Let us know when you're ready to come out and we can probably fill an entire boat with buddies for you.

    Great Lakes tech diving

Lake Michigan (my homewater) has a decent variety of shipwrecks at technical depths (150-330', 45-100 m) or technical-advantaged depths (say, extended stay at 90'/30 m). There's one such wreck out of the Chicago area (the Thomas Hume), served by Double Action Dive Charters. There's a much...

Swimming Laps to improve SAC rate

To a certain extent, your SAC is what it is because of your metabolic needs. You can't go any lower than what you need to survive. (Think of this as your "ideal SAC," consuming no more than the bare minimum.) Swimming helps your actual SAC approach the ideal SAC. Fit people generally cope...

Safe to drive from LA to SF immediately after 3 day liveaboard?

How long will your last surface interval be, between getting out of the water for the last dive and getting in the car?

Why we don't always use freediving fins in scuba?

Freediving fins are great for generating speed and thrust to cover lots of distance on a breath-hold, but don't offer as much fine control while requiring more effort to manage the length. The mid-length scuba fin tries to strike a workable balance in the middle that meets the needs of divers...

    Taming the long hose

I'm making do with a Halcyon mock canister stick until I'm in a position to purchase a can light. One of my Fundies teammates had one and I like it as a solution.

    Aruba.....ever been?

I did a handful of dives in Aruba several years ago. The water is a bit colder than most of the Caribbean and the viz wasn't as spectacular, but the couple of wreck sites that we visited were eminently accessible for all levels of diver and I enjoyed them. Re: food - don't eat at your resort...

NASE! Your thoughts and opinions please

I used the NASE educational materials for my Intro Cave academics. That manual was good, although it's possible that it has more to do with the writer/editor (Harry Averill) than the agency as a whole. I'm not really under the impression that many people are actively teaching anymore.

    After ReActivate, what next?

Check with Rainbow Reef! They have instructors who specialize in adaptive diving, have worked with DiveHeart and veterans' groups before, etc. I imagine that they'll be able to talk you through options that work for you.

Girl dead, boy injured - Lake McDonald, Glacier National Park

[Paragraph about lake depth removed for fact-checking.] The official Parks Service page suggests that this lake is nearly 500' deep (150 m) Glacier National Park lakes rarely exceed 50° F (10° C). It's late fall and this park is pretty far north, so I would be prepared to bet that the water is...

Chest pain after almost every dive

This is absolutely "call DAN" territory! Recurring chest pain is troubling under any circumstances and doubly so underwater. Get it checked out by a dive medicine-aware doctor before you splash again.
