Layang Layang or Mabul - Kapalai

I have not been on MV Celebes. I have seen their LOB in areas other than Kapalai, Mabul and Sipadan. The normal operators will not go to far away sites like Mataking, Buhoyan, Padanan..., it is simply way too far. There are many more islands out there in that area, still relatively...

Layang Layang or Mabul - Kapalai

Sounds like LOB is for you. As too the sites not being deep, well it depends on where. Sipadan is mighty deep. Mabul and Kapalai is quite shallow.

Layang Layang or Mabul - Kapalai

The beauty of LOB is maximum time diving, but if you are not used to the limited environment then a land based is best for you. If unlimited shore/pier dive is important to you, make sure it is in your dive package.

Layang Layang or Mabul - Kapalai

Mabul has a few resorts on it, so is more lively. Layang Layang only has one resort, so is more dead at night. Since you preferred an LOB, then I guess you like the quietness and intimacy of single resort. Perhaps Layang Layang maybe more to your liking. It looks like an aircraft carrier...

    Malaria in Mabul/Sipidan

Was in that area, Semporna and Islands Sept 2004. Definately there are mosquitos. They did not bother me or my kids since we had insect repellent on. Even super clean Singapore has mosquitos; once in awhile during the wet monsoon there maybe occurences of Malaria and Dengue. This does...

    Malaria in Mabul/Sipidan

In Asia, mosquitos are everywhere. Mabul has these pests too. The best way to avoid it is insect repellent.

    Turtle Cavern Sipadan

It is called Turtle Tomb. Many turtles swim in and cannot find the way out, hence drown in there. There are Marlin and Dophin bones in there too. Was told placed there by other divers. I thought it was an interesting venture into this cave system. I followed the SMART team in many...

Can you help me id this dive site?

You do not have to go to Papua for that. Try and arrange a night Cement wreck dive with Borneo Divers in Labuan. They do not dive everyday, only certain days now. Actually, that bio stuff can be seen on most night dives in Brunei, Miri and Labuan. Turn off the light and wave your hand...

    Tioman or Perhentians?

If you are really into diving and want a good sampling of sites, why not try a LOB that goes through east coast peninsular Malaysia. Go check with Penetration Divers in Tanglin Singapore and see what the schedules are. You can just call them up. If you can afford the extra time and flight...

    Bunaken/Lembeh or Irian Jaya?

Lembeh Resort is newer, quite a few of the season guides for that area have defected to this resort. KBR is world famous but old. Under going renovations and has new management. I would prefer to stay at Lembeh Resort for more luxurious room and great guides trained by Bruce. They also...

    Exposure protection for Malyasia

If you are coming via Singapore on Monday - Saturday there are a few dive shops here and not spread all over Singapore. 3 shops in Lucky Plaza but you have to be careful of their prices. 3 shops in Concourse. The rest are dotted here and there. Generally you can find what ever you want...

    Exposure protection for Malyasia

According to the post, Mel B is going from London to Malaysia, so perhaps acustomed to a cold environment. 3 mm should be enough. Was near Sipadan once in July 2004 and another time in September 2004. Did not use my 3mm. Just dived in my lycra or neoprene vest. If you are sensitive to...

Three days on Bali - how to maximize bottom time

Besides Bali, there is Manado that also requires a flight from Jakarta. Besides Bali, there is Lombok that also requires a flight from Jakarta. Besides Bali, there is Thousand Islands just outside Jakarta (poor vis and marine life).

Three days on Bali - how to maximize bottom time

Not many have heard of Seraya let alone dived it. It is relatively new compared to Tulamben area. The resort was partly operational about 2/3 years back. It has tanks, compressors... etc... it is still building other structures and a perhaps a new pool. Since it is still in the...

    Bali

I was in Pemutaran Bali mid March. The place was about 15% full (all 4 resorts combined). Dive boat hardly used. Great for me getting all the personal attention (resort and dive center) at low low prices.

Three days on Bali - how to maximize bottom time

If you really want to maximize your bottom time you have to stay beach side as you indicated. Car rides and boat rides just eats into your bottom time. If you like macro stuff, Seraya is SUPER good. If you want to mix it up a bit and not far from Seraya is Tulamben. They have big and...

    Bunaken/Lembeh or Irian Jaya?

Some people do not react well to mosquito stings. Extreme itching results in extreme scratching... the air con room can greatly help reduce the level of bugs in the room so you get a decent nights rest ready for the next day of diving. In Indonesia the site typically has a LOT of bugs in...
