The last part of my post when I was talking about using a pony in a pool was supposed to be a joke. Earlier in my post I stated that a pony should be a backup only and you should be careful to not let it give you a false since of security.

Hey it wont hurt to have one. Weird crap happens and having more air isn't a bad thing just make sure you don't use it as an extension to your air. Back up only.

My last open water dive was in low viz, about 2-4 ft. There was only 2 of us students though. After doing skills on a platform we followed the instructor with one of us on each side of him and with a dive master behind us. It was a good experience diving in low viz. We now dive often in a lake...
The setup I am working on is an Air2 and then adding a Pony with an octo for the deeper dives. Since around where I live a shallow river is the only place to dive in the winter without a drysuit.
