Its almost warm enough here in Texas to start diving the lakes again but for now I often dive in the Comal river. The Comal has an average depth of about 10ft with a max of about 15ft depending on how much the aquifer is putting out. They are easy dives and an al80 can last you about 1 1/2 hours...
I give the nurse Props for doing what she did. Most nurses are not trained to handle emergency's like this in the field and especially with the very limited medical equipment that she had. She did the best with what she had. Wish all nurses were like that ;)
We briefly discussed diving injury's in my paramedic program and it mostly involved airway management, spinal motion restriction. We were taught what decompression sickness was and the need to get to a compression chamber but we did not go into great detail. The service I work for has protocols...
I agree with why use any weight if you don't have to. I use little to no air in my bc while diving and never have to add any to ascend. Although I think rx7diver had a good point about being able to stay buoyant at the surface if your BC was unable to hold air.
We dive there often so we will check it out someday soon. It might be a bit of a swim from Hinman island unless they would let us into Wurstfest in SCUBA gear.
