Standardized Hand Signals for Remaining Air

I'm also Dutch, but didn't learn to dive 'at home', but this is what we use and have encountered quite widely (Curaçao, Bonaire, GBR, Raja Ampat). Works for us, but it is one of the things I always check with everyone I'm diving with before entering the water.

Watching dive videos on Youtube is infuriating

I think the type of diving makes a big difference - I'm a fairly inexperienced diver, certified in 2009 and then a long period with only very few dives, and now almost 60 in the past 3 years. Initially, even setting up gear was slightly daunting, and there was always the instructor there to...

    Gear backpack

Considering my camera gear is pricier (and more fragile) than my scuba gear, I just check all of it in a Samsonite hardshell (2 full sets of gear minus regs in a midsize roller), and keep the cameras in carry-on. Then there's the increasing trend towards ever smaller and lighter carry on bags...

    RAJA AMPAT

We loved Papua Explorers, found it very good value, plenty of diving opportunities, great sites. I'm sure a liveaboard can get you further afield to other areas (Misool), but we saw a lot of the LOB boats at or around the same sites we were diving day in, day out. You can forget about 100%...

How to carry SMB, so that it can be re-stowed?

We have ours clipped and bungeed to the backplate. Easy to reach back and deploy (for my flexible shoulders, at least) and easy enough to stow. Worst case I can ask my buddy to help with the stowage, but this kept us nicely streamlined and compact, no dangly bits, which was nice for the currents...

Diving in April - Komodo, Raja Ampat, Somewhere Else?

There are plenty of resorts, as mentioned (RA biodiversity, Papuap Explorers, Kir Eco, Sordido Bay, Misool Eco resort, and so on). I would personally be very hesitant to stay with a Homestay if diving is your top priority - this is a very remote area, and I simply don't trust very small...

    Need BP/W Harness Advice

    1. What the others have said. There are differences in suppleness, however; the webbing on my GF's BP/W (Scubapro X-tek, though I'm not sure what the webbing is; LDS supplied and threaded) is less supple than mine (other LDS, Tecline gear). I prefer the slightly more supple stuff. 2. Crotch...

    A non-dive related cruise question.

Only cruise ship I was on went to Antarctica. No boardwalk there, but the trip more than made up for it. Antarctic cruise with some diving is on the bucket list.

Liveaboard vs. staying at a hotel in Raja Ampat

We stayed with Papua Explorers, in central, which was lovely. And the diving was great. I'm sure liveaboards can and do take you farther afield, but there are very many excellent and renowned sites near (among others) Papua Explorers, Kri Eco Resort, etc. The resort will also organize more...

    Do organs compress whilst diving?

True, poor phrasing on my part - on land you are generally vertical (at least partly) when awake, and your blood pools at the lowest point and a large reservoir - your legs. Suspended in water that also exerts pressure to a compressible department and in good trim with your legs possibly above...

    Papua Explorers Dive Resort question

We went in April, and loved it. Not a lot of experience between us, but it was our best diving to date (which includes Bonaire, Ribbon Reefs/GBR for tropical destinations). Certainly worth it, and worth repeating although a 14 day Liveaboard that ranges further afield is also very tempting.

    Do organs compress whilst diving?

In theory I don't think compression is the only factor, but also loss of a gravity, which is usually what keeps a proportion of your venous blood in your limbs rather than your core. Immersion does shift blood volume towards the central circulation, so part of the roughly 2/3 of your blood...

    First time wet suit shopper

Congrats on the new suit. I'm surprised about the feel on the Waterproof; I find the plush orange lining to be much more comfortable (and fast drying) than on 'standard' wetsuits, although much more comfortable when not bone dry, and my W3 (3.5mm) Waterproof is a great suit. I'll definitely...

    Advanced Underwater Video Camera Recommendations

It's a lens that you attach underwater, to the outside of the housing. Inon is perhaps the most well known manufacturer. Google interceptor121, he's a poster here who shoots a fair bit of video using RX100 series cameras, the Panny LX100 and micro four thirds, with a variety of wet lenses.

    Advanced Underwater Video Camera Recommendations

I know the 5DII is great - I owned 2 for a while. But the system was too big for my wishes and needs (= 1 bag backpack travel), so I went mirrorless and never looked back. My point was that a 5D setup is an enormous step up in size and weight from a GoPro. I'm not a big video shooter, but most...

    Advanced Underwater Video Camera Recommendations

A 5DII with housing (other than not being 4K and really being quite old now) is going to be very pricey and really quite huge. What level of control do you want from your camera? There are GoPros that do 4K, and Panasonic is a strong option for 4K cameras (video, compact, and interchangeable...

    Flores - topside?

3 days is a little (very!) short; we spent 5 days getting from Ende to Labuan Bajo, and it was still quite a lot of driving. All cars are rented with drivers, do a bit of searching to find someone, and don't pay in advance, cash in hand for a few days at a time is how we did it. Well worth the...

Another nose pain issue, low volume mask, tried all the normal fixes

Time for a new mask with a softer skirt, I'd say. I love my frameless low volume Beauchat MaxLux S; thing with masks is that you can't tell if they'll fit by looking at them online...

Anyone ever been in an accident in Bonaire w/o their insurance?

Another option is always third-party car rental insurance that you can book online, separately, usually with better cover and at a lower cost than from the rental agency direct.

Canon 5d mk iii vs. Sony a7r ii

You should be able to find a suitable combination for a MetaBones adapter and any Canon lens you would like to use underwater among Nauticam's various solutions / port extensions (they mention the MetaBones adapter and Canon lenses explicitly on their website). Phil Rudin (poster here and on...
