Is back inflation really 'all that'?

I thought I was going to hate it / be bothered by it, but you know what? I don't notice it underwater, and barely notice it at all above water. The material's softer than the main webbing on mine, and with a 3mm wetsuit it Just Works and doesn't get in the way. Try it.

New camera housing for older camera?

I would go for the G7X (or Sony RX100), no question. The 1" sensors (all of them, from the mark I to the slightly better ones in the more current series) are really quite incredible for their size and outperform every other small sensor camera of yesteryear by a fair margin.

Is back inflation really 'all that'?

In terms of function? Doesn't really matter. I can dive successfully and maintain good boyancy with both. In terms of personal preference and comfort? I'm not going back to a jacket BC. Do not like the squeeze, do not like the feeling of being 'blocked in', and much prefer to stability of a...

    Slightly big BCD

this is much less true of a BP/W, particularly with a crotch strap. Which is probably an important part of why I find them so much more comfortable than jacket BC's (in addition to the far less restrictive feel of a few simple straps vs. inflating jacket).

    Slightly big BCD

No, it probably won't. The hydros is a back-inflate BC, so none of that constriction you get with a stab jacket. If you haven't dived it and don't need it immediately, I would say get the right size if it's still an option, but it shouldn't be a safety risk in any event...

    BCD for Snorkeling?

What on earth for? It would place you in a sub-optimal position for snorkeling (vest push you up a little, and back inflate make it more difficult for you to move around. I also duck dive a lot when snorkeling (and not doing scuba). If you want a little bit of extra bouyancy for whatever, use a...

    Determining weight needed

I think it's a few things - you have your breathing under better control as you improve your diving, and you feel more comfortable being a little more 'on the edge'. There's a false sense of security being able to descend easily when overweighted, and it's how a lot of us learned (sitting on the...

SP Hydros Pro vs Halcyon Eclipse

Two things: First, answer the question by showing me the relevance of the innovations you believe you see here. I went through the marketing point by point and indicated what I think of the relevance. I am not saying it's not a good product, just that 90% of the innovation seems to be 'it...

    Apeks xtx50 or Scubapro Mk25 Evo G260

I have an XTX50 (both) + DST+5th port. I like the hose routing that gives me, and price was very similar to the Scubapro. The local shops service both, but Apeks had a deal going for the setup with miflex hoses (and the regs are 100% identical except for the yellow cover on the octo).

SP Hydros Pro vs Halcyon Eclipse

I have zero vested interests. I can afford the 300 bucks. That's really not the issue. So we're clear, I'm using value w to mean "relative worth, utility, or importance" here. You can actually find the Hydros Pro in EU web shops for around 630 euros, so actually only 100-150 more than I paid for...

SP Hydros Pro vs Halcyon Eclipse

I don't disagree. My Tecline feels nicer, but both are pretty new right now, so can't really say either is showing much wear 50 dives in.

SP Hydros Pro vs Halcyon Eclipse

For what little it's worth: my girlfriend has an X-Tek Scubapro BP/W. it's nice. But no better built (stitching, finish, materials) than my Tecline. It costs about the same. Both are more than tough enough. The DM in Raja (marine biologist and diver) had the same kit I have, and it looked great...

SP Hydros Pro vs Halcyon Eclipse

Well, indeed. My 'cheap' Tecline has high quality construction throughout, good fabric, tough, and good value. Expensive means exclusive, not necessarily any better or tougher or more reliable in ways that matter. I didn't pay much more for my BP/W, waterproof W3, apeks xtx50 reg set, fins and...

SP Hydros Pro vs Halcyon Eclipse

By that same token, I've yet to see people compalin about DSS or Halcyon BP/W setups. It looks like a nice BC, I just don't see anything on it that would make me want to spend 800+ dollars. I have a tecline BP/W (because a local dive shop carries them), with integrated (but modular, thus...

Getting First Wing Setup, NEED HELP

the finnsub had a heavier outer shell (2000 vs 1000 denier cordura), but otherwise seems very similar. My Tecline is also 1000D and pretty damn tough - or sure the slight weight penalty would be worth the 'gain' in toughness to me. As for accessories - I could mount my Tecline weight pockets...

Getting First Wing Setup, NEED HELP

I'm very happy with my Techline BP/W setup. Similar to the DTD stuff, looks almost identical to the Deep6 wings as well. Polish company. Would buy again. Local pricing on the FinnSub stuff is pretty similar though, only slightly more expensive. These guys carry a lot of the brands mentioned in...

    Back surgery and still diving?

Why no backroll? It's not a particularly great strain on the back, less of a jolt than a giant stride. For lower strain: side mount?

    Traveling with your camera? Cases/bags??

I fit my rx100, acquapazza case, strobe and the topside gear and regs in a Carry-on F-stop backpack with a couple of inserts I can remove. No issues on Emirates or KLM or local Indo airlines.

How Much Gear Do You Bring When You Travel?

How much stuff do you need? I can very easily fit 1 full set of dive gear and clothing for a week in 1 checked suitcase (within weight limits and medium-sized) with the regs and cameras in carry-on. I've seen several folks talk about wearing the BC on the plane. Will probably get you some weird...

5 Tips For Choosing Your First BCD

I echo what the others have said - when I first used my BP/W, I over-inflated (like I did with jackets) and even with a crotch strap had to keep my knees up and pay attention to not flip forward. After I while I wised up, inflate a little less, and now also push myself on to my back, and spend...
