    Another airline abuse story

I feel your pain, but.... You don't know that. Reasons why they may not have had a crew but not known until the last minute: Crew members called in sick. Crew members were delayed on an earlier flight and would therefore no longer have been in compliance with FAA duration-of-service or rest...

Building a Save a Dive kit

If you're an individual diver (not a DM who is trying to support other divers with dodgy gear) and your gear is serviced and has been on a dive or two since being serviced (or since new)... then you shouldn't need anything except maybe some o-rings for the valve-to-regulator connection. If I'm...

Does the first stage or second stage have some type of filter in it?

Most first stages have a sintered brass inlet screen that mainly serves to prevent foreign objects from entering the regulator while it is detached from a cylinder. Typically they are in fact replaced when the reg is serviced. Second stages typically do not have a filter or screen of any kind...

Is this normal for scuba tanks?

There are places that will inspect tanks. In the United States, we have a system of laws and regulations that govern hazardous materials, such as high pressure air. The U.S. Department of Transportation (the DOT) promulgates regulations that strictly define what is safe, so that there are...

Is this normal for scuba tanks?

That should have been covered in your open water training materials. There is an annual visual inspection, and a hydrostatic test required every five years.

Is this normal for scuba tanks?

I believe that this is some of the worst advice I have seen posted on Scubaboard in the many years I have participated here.

Is this normal for scuba tanks?

Actually, it has a stamp on it that purports to indicate that it meets European approvals. There have been problems with some cylinders from China having falsified markings. I understand that you imported it yourself from a seller in China who you do not know. How can you say with confidence...

Is this normal for scuba tanks?

No, they have to be certified at the time of manufacture, because many of the things that the cylinder must comply with cannot be verified except at the time of manufacture. For example, in the USA, an aluminum cylinder must be made from a single block of cast aluminum, and that block must have...

Is this normal for scuba tanks?

::shrug:: I have no idea what it is. I wouldn't pump air into it, you do what you want. Well, if we thought it were a UN/ISO cylinder, those have a 10 year hydro cycle.

Is this normal for scuba tanks?

::shrug:: UN Cylinder made in China, assuming that's the UN mark not a pi symbol. See the UN/ISO section here for what it's supposed to look like. From a regulatory standpoint I don't think it can be filled or hydro tested in compliance with USA regulations because it does not have a USA approval.

Is this normal for scuba tanks?

The scorkel and its generic variants have been the subject of much discussion and derision here. If it works for you, most of that isn't relevant. There are two questions you should consider related to the safety of the cylinder. The first is the one you ask. There should be no visible...

Minimalist Setup for Small River Diving (~15ft or less)?

I rarely do dives where it is necessary but what I have is something like the one in the second link you posted, just a short folding pruning saw that has a handle that folds to protect the blade. As for bungee wings of death, they are well covered in a much older thread

Minimalist Setup for Small River Diving (~15ft or less)?

I dive local lakes and rivers. I have experimented with "minimalist" rigs and made several dives with an old-school plastic "backplate," no octo, no BC, the idea being to streamline and maybe have an inexpensive set of gear I can leave in the back of the car, bottom of the boat, etc. I...

Fins are too big, what to do?

Sell them and get something that fits. Really. Use an LDS or someplace like Leisure Pro that has a liberal return policy. Fins are consumable items that require periodic replacement. A failure under the wrong circumstances can lead to an emergency.

What Dive Gear & Accessories Have You REMOVED from Your Kit, or replaced with something different?

Dive flag, because the mobos don't know what it is so why bother. No enforcement here Open heel fins that were supposed to be the One True Way for scuba divers according to an early instructor Excessive drag Excessive effort wasted on the floppiness of the connection Heel straps that fail...
