    Stolen drysuit in the PNW

Last weekend my drysuit was stolen from a dive resort in the Pacific Northwest;-0 . I left it outside my room to dry overnight after a night dive, and when I got up in the morning it was gone. This occurred at a place where just about all the divers leave their suits outside, and nothing's...

    Check This Out

Wow, that looks really cool! A game to play with my GPS! I was just wondering the other day what I could do with my GPS, now that I don't use it for geologic mapping anymore. I wonder what kind of stuff would be good to leave in an underwater cache.... Suggestions, anyone? otter-cat:jester:

    Thanks to weight belt testers!!!

Hi Heath, I certainly wasn't one of your testers, but it sounds like you've developed something new. What is it? otter-cat:)

    Did I get ripped off?

I would say that you got a reasonable deal. With some shopping around, you probably could have found some of that gear for a little less, but with the $80 discount on the course, it works out to be a pretty decent price for the gear you got. As for the snorkel, I got a $25 snorkel because...

WOMEN: What kind of tank do you prefer?

Thanks for your input, SubMariner. I actually found out about the adaptors myself just yesterday. Now I'm not sure whether to go with the low pressure or the high pressure steel tank. Since I've basically ruled out aluminum for the moment, can anyone tell me again the pros and cons of hp vs...

    I have a problem....

I, too, am addicted to diving. There is no cure, there is only the temporary relief from the cravings by, well, giving in to them and diving. BUT I must warn you, you are in terrible DANGER. There is an associated side effect which some diveaholics, many whom you will meet here, have come...

who has the most logged dives?

Not I, said the (otter) cat. But my goal is to have 100 before I'm 30.

    Apeks ATX200 / ATX40

Xerxes, I think that maybe you didn't understand my point. I was not advocating buying the ATX200 because my LDS told me to buy one. My LDS owner is a great guy, who has helped me buy stuff from other stores when he did not have what I wanted or needed. He doesn't try to sell me stuff that...

    A Reg that can't freeze??????

Thanks for the clarification, Neil! Of course, now that makes me wonder why the magazine TRUETEXAN read is recommending their use for ice diving. Wouldn't that type of diving best be done with the most modern reg technology available? Just wondering. otter-cat:)

    nerves about learning

Diving can be scary, especially at the beginning, but it really is worth it! Your instructor will help you learn everything you need to know, and the best thing for you to do while you're learning is to ask LOTS of questions. Ask her/him about every little concern you have, even if it seems...

If you were to have a new place to dive and frequent often..

Umm, it sounds good, but if there's no one there selling gear, how do you get the gear to test in it, and how would the place pay for itself? Also, I'd be more interested in a video camera than a video screen, so I could view tapes of myself underwater and figure out what I need to adjust to...

Being Banned from a Dive Shop..

When I was in the market for a drysuit, my LDS had one that had been around the shop for a while (which he told me) and was willing to sell it to me for a VERY good price. The fit was OK, but not exactly perfect. I mentioned that I had friends who had a drysuit they might sell me for a low...

WOMEN: What kind of tank do you prefer?

Thanks everyone for your input so far. I guess I'm leaning toward the low pressure steel tanks, as I could benefit from their smaller size and reduced weight on my belt. The HP steel tanks sound good, too, but I already have a regulator that is not set up for DIN. Did I miss anything...

    A Reg that can't freeze??????

If double hosed regulators are better at preventing freezing, why aren't they used anymore, or at least used more commonly in cold water? I dive in cold waters (though no ice around) and specifically sought out a reg that was good for cold water use. In my search, I never saw anything about...

    Apeks ATX200 / ATX40

I recently spent the money and got the ATX 200 set-up. I had decided to go with an Apeks system because I had heard really good things about it from a lot of divers I trust. The reason I chose to spend the extra money to get the ATX 200 instead of the ATX100 or ATX50 was that I am on a limited...

The Great local dive shop vs. online debate

Regarding Mike Ferrara's posts about Sherwood: Admittedly, I don't know much about the relationships between manufacturers and an LDS, but that sounds like an outrageous request by Sherwood! I think this has been mentioned before, but it seems to me that the LDSs need to band together and...

Going diving in Hood Canal, WA...what else is there to do around there?

I'm going to be heading to the Hood Canal to do some diving sometime in the next month or two. I've been diving at Hoodsport, but have never seen much of the surrounding area. For this trip, I will be meeting a friend who is not yet certified. Does anyone have any suggestions for what my...

    Spinoff PADI rumor/Tabel training-necesary?

One of the main reasons I feel so strongly that tables are extremely important is that they are an excellent tool for teaching nitrogen loading and dive planning concepts. You can learn how to operate a computer safely, but learning the tables teaches a lot more about how to dive safely. I...

Dry Suit - Neoprene or shell - which is better (with poll :))

I wear a regular ole neoprene drysuit (not crushed, not compressed, not squished except at depth.) I haven't used any other drysuits, but I do really like my neoprene suit. Here's why: It's very warm and comfy. I, too, can wear differing amounts/types of layers under my drysuit and they...

    STICKING with it !

I bet the percentage depends a lot on where you live. If you live far from water, or far from warm water, a lot of the students in the class may give it up for lack of opportunity or lack of money. If you live where diving is warm and plentiful, many more that take the class will stay with it...
