Neat $10 vac-sealer (for li-ion, moisture absorbers, storage, etc.)

Just wanted to post about a neat appliance I found recently: The Reynolds Handi-Vac vacuum sealer. Scuba uses: - I store my Salvo li-ion battery in the fridge to extend it's life, but some people advise against this because it can result in condensation that may hurt the wiring. However...

    Wrist mounted digital compass?

I'm also curious about how good the top-of-the-line digital wrist unit compasses are these days, including the ones only for dry use? (I assume the waterproof ones are behind the curve...) Do they indicate true north (earth's rotational axis) instead of just the magnetic north? Is their...

    Equipment purchase priority-BCD or Reg?

If you want a backplate and wing, then do research on which to get and buy that first because a lot of shops only rent non-bp/w BCDs. For warm water travel, check out DSS kydex plate with their tropical travel wing (+ I prefer hog harness), or Oxycheq ultra lite travel plate with their Mach V...

    Sizing Drysuits

    Fingerless/half finger gloves

I've looked, but haven't found any. I've also come to the conclusion (after cutting fingers off a pair of regular gloves) that they would be difficult to get to work/maintain. For the glove to work it would have to minimize water inflow/exchange through the wrist opening + the open finger ends...

Brand new to drysuit diving...advice? :)

For me (and many others), the wrist tendons pop out if I move my hands in certain ways. Take a look: That causes an opening in the latex seal no matter how tight it is causing some water to leak in. To get around this issue, you can pull the seals further up your forearms, use drygloves, try...

    Fusion Neck Seal??

sorry for the minor hijack, but would it be easy or difficult to install a neoprene neck seal on a Fusion suit that originally had a latex seal, say if the seal needed changing anyway? would would it involve, roughly speaking?

Finally fins that fit my rock boots!!!

Try XS Scuba Power fins. Size XL have foot pockets that were about 10% larger than my XL jet pockets, but the blades were smaller, closer to L jet blade. Perhaps size L would also have slightly larger pockets than L jets. Otherwise they are black rubber fins, similar to jets.

    BC Hose repair...need help!

if you have trouble getting the new hose one on, try putting it (or just the ends) in hot water for 5 min (to expand them) first.

    Snorkel dry vs. not

FWIW, only the basic J-type snorkels work for snorkel-to-mouth rescue breathing, which is taught by some instructors for use while towing an unconscious diver. I currently use one of those folding J-snorks so that I can keep it in my thigh pocket. It's not as comfortable/easy to...

    Fin Tests- Techniques and conditioning

In part. The author references Rodale's ScubaLab fin tests in his overall article, and tells us that he applied and was chosen to participate in ScubaLab's tests. However, he also did his own testing from what I understand. It's been a long time since I last read the article closely, and it has...

    Fin Tests- Techniques and conditioning

For me the breaststroke at relaxed speeds is like walking, in that it feels fairly effortless, whereas the forward crawl exhausts me more even at similar speeds. I try to use the Total Immersion style, but my lack of finesse in the technique is probably to blame for why the breaststroke feels...

    Fin Tests- Techniques and conditioning

messier42, you make a good case above for the flutter kick. that said, my understanding is that the frog kick was adopted as the main propulsion technique by early cave divers (pre-scooters, etc.), which suggests that they likely found it to be the most efficient way to cover distance on...

    Fin Tests- Techniques and conditioning

I've heard good things about the Excellerating force fins, but I can't justify spending $400 (regular, no extras) to $800 (Tan Delta with all extras) on a pair of fins, especially when I don't know if I'd even really like them... I'm guessing the Seals swim faster than average divers and are...

    DIY: travelling twin cam band

I'm using an Oxycheq lightweight STA on a DSS backplate. But you can rig IDs like this using any similar STA and any normal backplate, although you may need to get longer STA bolts for it. It's strong enough for pretty much any pair of tanks. I've used it with double 12lt and larger steels...

    Fin Tests- Techniques and conditioning

Charisse's favorite fin looks a bit huge for her... Personally, I'd like to see a fin designed to optimize frog kicking efficiency... and then tested against divers flutter kicking with force fins or biofins in terms of air consumption at moderate speeds when pushing the type of loads that rec...

Plastic waist buckle for your hog rig?

I have several different buckles that vary quite a bit in weight (see pic). I use the heavy-duty SS buckle with my SS plate, the small, light steel buckle with my travel plate, the Bryden to hold my can light, and the plastic for backup or when I need an extra for something... (the weights in...

    Drysuit fins.

would the XL jets have fit your feet without the altera boots (with just the fusion sock + your undergarment socks on)? would it have been tight, or with a bit of room? if you answered: 'with a bit of room,' then ditch the altera boots. try chuck taylor hi-tops, cheap knock-offs, or similar...

    Jet Fin spring straps

Another way to do these is to buy a pair of 1" d-rings. saw through the middle of the straight edge, pull it apart, insert through spring end, and padding or such, then clamp it down onto the jet's pin holes. this worked for me with the 1" d-rings from reefscuba.com.

    DIY: travelling twin cam band

I dive a bp/w rig. For IDs, I switch from my single tank wing to my doubles wing, reverse the STA, and add an extra pair of cam straps and slide keepers to rig the IDs like this: I cut the center bar off the triglides since the first pic was taken (see them in the 2nd pic). It makes things...
